Isn't this the entire theory behind our support for Ukraine?

This guy has read every last Heinlein novel and never once caught a whiff of irony.

Everyone can tell when someone is fronting and faking confidence, or faking being humble, nobody is fooled.

The folks who do it badly tend to stick out. But this is far more useful on the margins, where a firm's performance is genuinely not well-understood.

Companies understating/overstating their expected earnings to manipulate their stock price is a time-tested means of legalized insider trading. Firms, like Apple, used to do an exceptional job of sitting on products in development until the last moment, generating all sorts of ambient hype whether or not they had anything to brag about releasing. Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway is a textbook case of "talk small and carry a big balance sheet" and routinely outperforms its competitors as a result.

Exploiting gaps between your perceived and actual value is functionally how value-investors make money. If nobody ever got fooled, equities would never value themselves different from the perfectly predicted book value.

The ship is doing just fine, except for a bit of clipping.

So, right now, there's a ton of investment flowing into Japan because the yen is in complete free-fall.

This is being used as evidence that China's economy is failing.

It won't be immediately. This is going to be a pump and dump, but I guarantee you there's going to be a set of first wave investors who watch the stock price go vertical for a few weeks at least.

Also, non-zero chance we get the kind of blatant stockmarket manipulation that gave us Tesla, Gamestop, and Best Buy short squeezes.

  • Sometimes you can win a fight by not fighting, as fighting is actually really expensive and risky

  • Maybe consider feeding your army. That can be important both in times of war and peace.

  • Please do not lead a frontal charge uphill into a fortified enemy position. I can't believe I have to explain this to you fucking newbs, but it keeps happening so here we are.

  • Have you tried being sneaky?

  • Read history. Sometimes someone has done a thing before you and you can just copy their homework. Sometimes you can see someone else copying homework and use that to your advantage. Sometimes its just good to know about things other than what you, personally, have seen and done.

99% of all the bad shit

As no real Communist countries existed before the big 1917 Revolution, this is arguably over-reductive. Not exactly unfair to observe the first generation of Soviet Countries as bound to all the same social problems and governing mistakes of the prior century, particularly in the early years.

But what you end up with in analysis here is just a Parenti-ism, declaring the Soviets uniquely bad for having the same (draconian) state security service as everyone else.

Basically, the Soviets are guilty of not rising above the sins of the past fast enough. Meanwhile, Red Scares and White Terrors are never a factor in how or why a Russian Soviet might be weeding out counter-revolutionaries left, right, and center.

Left anti-communists are still like “yeah but we still need to focus on that remaining 1%, meaning the lack of instantaneous perfection of the USSR, even though it ceased to exist over thirty years ago. Also let’s talk endlessly about China.”

We could talk about China, but I doubt Sinophobes would like where the conversation went

the moment the labor movement in the US hitched itself to the Democrat coalition

It was eat or be eaten. A populist movement divided was not going to stand. The Labor movement's real failing wasn't hitching itself to the Democrats but failing to hollow out its leadership and wear it like a skin-suit into the next century.
