Bernie “flared out” because he bent the knee.
He flaired out because the party unified around Biden and his campaign in the Midwest failed.
Every time he cucked to the Dems and repeated their narratives and endorsed them he got weaker and weaker
He'd been a consistent team player and entryist into the party since he took his house seat in '02. Even if he had won, you can guarantee he would have incorporated a bunch of Obama guys into his cabinet and negotiated with all the Senate haters.
Unlike Trump, he didn't have the core of the party on his side, so he was forever compromising and triangulating.

Modern American race science is a jumbled mess even by its own insane standards right now. Plenty of people will believe just about fucking anything if you can get Joe Rogan or Tucker Carlson to nod at you with a blank stare. But the current Presidential race feels like its powered entirely by 90s-era nostalgia. Ramaswamay can't win purely because he's not floating up to me in a fever dream of half remembered "Lifestyle of the Rich And Famous" day time TV episodes.
"Progressive" only really became a thing during the Late Clinton / Early Bush Era, when talk radio heads were trying to turn "liberal" into a slur. Which, in hindsight, very funny. The folks that adhere to the word tend to be ones who grew up in that time period and were hunting for leadership that was farther to the left than Hillary Clinton and John McCain.
As they pivoted, lots of conservative media shifted in turn. And so you got a bunch of talking heads tying "progressive" back to the eugenics movements of the early 20th century and the Girl Boss Capitalism of the 1980s. So the term soured among younger millennials and zoomers, while the post-Soviet world denuded terms like Socialism and Communism of their nationalist energy.
In another ten or twenty years? Idk. Alphas will all call themselves something new, maybe? Or maybe we'll all go back to calling one another Radical Centrists while winking and nudging? Who can say. But its all just verbage, one way or another. What's really the difference between a Liz Warren Liberal, a Bernie Sanders DemSucc, and an Infrared Patriotic Communist, anyway?

There was a DeSantis wing of media that definitely came out against Trump. And before NeverTrumpers were backing Hailey, they were all writing 500 word Op-Eds about how liberals needed DeSantis to beat Trump.
Whomever started it, DeSantis clearly wasn't interested in playing nice from day one.
