US currently occupies a larger percentage of Syria than Russia is occupying of Ukraine.

Russian economy is basically independent of the west at this point, there's no economic leverage left that the west can exercise.

Do you really think that China is really so stupid that they would trust US at this point?

After the Grain Deal was struck, Western Europe became the top importer of Ukrainian grain, and a negligible amount of it ended up feeding the "Millions of hungry people around the world". The bulk of the African, Asian, and Global South countries, rely on Russian grain and not the Ukrainian. This does not affect global food security. Perhaps correct the title to not spread misinformation?

I don't think anybody who's been paying attention is, but seems to be a shock for a lot of people in the west who've internalized the narrative that China just steals western tech and makes cheap stuff.

Shouldn't be surprising given that China has a huge and well educated population. China outnumber USA STEM Grads 8 to 1 and project to be 15 to 1 by 2030. China has also overtaken the US both in quantity and quality of research. And of course, China has a huge advantage with the state playing a major role in guiding the type of technology China focuses on instead of leaving it to the markets. So, it should be no surprise that China is already surpassing the west technologically now, and the gap will only keep growing going forward.

I've worked with project managers who must've believed that. :)

Right, that's all fair, but my understanding is that there's also excellent subway in all large cities, and great bus service. Also, my impression was that China used similar city planning to USSR with microdistricts where you have necessities near by and don't need to drive to do common things like buying groceries. Is that still the case in your experience?
