First of all, before anyone gets excited, I get coffee from starbucks extremely rarely. A couple times a year tops.

That being said, I am not a supporter of starbucks.

Ok, now, my main point- For everyone in here just saying the coffee tastes like shit, Try to be more productive towards the conversation. The coffee tastes bad, is an obvious fallacy, as nearly 40 MILLION people drink their coffee. If the coffee tastes like shit, then don't order a oat milk vanilla pumpkin spice chai latte.

The conversation is around starbucks trying to bust up unions.

Saying- the coffee tastes like shit (when 40 million people drinks it), is not productive towards the conversation, and does nothing to assist with the conversation of starbucks being anti-human, anti-union, and treating their workers like slaves.

My hobby of home automation, and running a home lab REALLY stopped up.

Pre-pandemic, I had a single server, pretty small, quiet, low energy usage. Post-pandemic, I have a full rack, redundant power, and tons of resources, and hundreds of containers and services.

Home automation: Pre-pandemic, I didn't have too much. Few security cameras, and a small handful of devices, mostly controlled by alexa. Post-pandemic, I can tell you every time you forget to wash your hands after taking a shit. I know exactly how much energy and instantaneous power nearly every device in my house uses. I have automated just about anything you can imagine. Pools, opening windows, controlling a fireplace, scaring cats away from the kitchen table.... you name it, and I have likely automated it and/or built hardware to automate it.

My other big hobby, was working on automotive projects: Pre-pandemic, I build a 1,000hp street-legal "race-car". Would drive it to work occasionally. Spent a lot of time in my garage with tig welders, plasma cutters, metal lathes... etc. Post-pandemic, I honestly have not touched anything in my garage in years. I don't really drive anywhere due to being full time WFH. So, I have not had much interest in messing with it. Also, its been really hot the last few years.

Bring it to your local tag office.

They can run all of the details, and most of the time get you sorted out.

[–] xtremeownage@lemmyonline.com 7 points 2 years ago

Well, nice knowing you unity....

[–] xtremeownage@lemmyonline.com 27 points 2 years ago

They are going to feel pretty damn stupid when nobody can buy/rent/watch/listen to their content and products...

Because, ya know... any product which can play any form of media, has the potential to infringe on IP....

I say, give them EXACTLY what they want. Give them, a week or two with zero profits, and see how quickly they change their tune.

I pay for the subscription solely for the purpose of supporting it. Most of the functionality it offers, just isn't useful to me.

And, the best part- Home assistant keeps getting better and better!

[–] xtremeownage@lemmyonline.com 11 points 2 years ago (7 children)

I am still using a DIY/homemade one I made back in 2020ish.

https://xtremeownage.com/2020/07/29/diy-garage-door-opener-home-assistant/

Still works perfectly. Less than 20$ of materials total. 100% local control. Locally compiled, open source firmware.

Would recommend.

Want to replace fossil fuels?

You have two options. Nuclear, or renewables.

Renewables, however, generally don't produce consistent energy output. So, you need a way to store the surplus, and release it at night time.

The most effective way of storing this energy, is currently pumped hydro. However, it has very specific geographical restrictions, and isn't an option in most cases.

The other option, is lithium, until a better alternative is produced.

As well, you need to replace fossil fuel usage for vehicles. The only current suitable alternative with an "OK" energy density, charge rate, and output capacity, is lithium based technologies. Typically uses Li-ion, or LiFePO4.

Have a cell phone? Its powered with lithium batteries. All cell phones, are powered with lithium. Typically LiPO, or Li-ion.

One day, this will change, but, until that day, lithium is needed.

So we can continue to use China/Bolivia's slave labor to get lithium instead?

[–] xtremeownage@lemmyonline.com 1 points 2 years ago

For public projects, I use github build pipelines.

For private, I use ansible.

I can finally subscribe to things on lemmy.ml! (after upgrading to 0.18 rc6)

That's exciting!

I hear- lots of issues are fixed, and federation will work better!

So- I am going to attempt to update everything to 0.18.

If- the update fails, there are backups in place, and I will revert the changes.

Because- lemmy needs more participation, here is my deal.

Sometime tomorrow, I will come back and check this thread. (Around noon-ish / lunch time CST), unless I get delayed. If so- then afternoon CST.

Edit- to give a few more choices.

I will give out a key, of your choice, for the top 5 highest voted comments (from the perspective of my instance).

If, there are multiple comments for the same game, only the winning / highest voted comment will be considered.

Obviously- the two which have the status of gifted, are unavailable. Have fun, good luck. If you win, I will reply under your comment. If you are skipped due to asking for something already claimed, I'll also let you know that.

Will send keys in a PM. (Hopefully- those work on here)

You are allowed to say, "I'll take anything" in which case, I will go in order, left to right, then top to bottom, and non-randomly give you the first one that pops up.

Edit- Done!

Giveaway #2 is up here: https://lemmyonline.com/post/7869

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3245

I posted far more details on the issue then I am putting here-

But, just to bring some math in- with the current full-mesh federation model, assuming 10,000 instances-

That will require nearly 50 million connections.

Each comment. Each vote. Each post, will have to be sent 50 million seperate times.

In the purposed hub-spoke model, We can reduce that by over 99%, so that each post/vote/comment/etc, only has to be sent 10,000 times (plus n*(n-1)/2 times, where n = number of hub servers).

The current full mesh architecture will not scale. I predict, exponential growth will continue to occur.

Let’s work on a solution to this problem together.

(Also- as federation has been completely broken on this particular server for me- there is a good chance I will not be able to see, or reply to anything posted below... That is, also assuming this even posts correctly to this server.)

(Just- migrated this instance over to kubernetes.... just testing federation...)

House/city got hit by a 115 mph wind gust, taking out power to most of the city last night.

Knocked down all of my trees, wrecked havoc on the city. Messed up roofs everywhere, and most importantly, no power for anyone!

https://www.koco.com/article/oklahoma-severe-storms-weather-tornado-hail-saturday/44233131

My city/utility estimates it may take up to a week to get power restored. But, thankfully, I have spent a lot of time preparing for this event.

As- my MAIN house batteries were only charged up to 50/60% when the wind hit- AND, I had a misconfiguration on my primary inverter causing them to shutdown at 20% (Rather then 10%), the first night, the entire house ran on battery from 11pm up to 7:20am. This includes, running the A/C, running my rack of servers. All of it.

I have a constant, 500w load from my servers. I have a optiplex micros in my kubernetes farm, I have a r730xd pushing 256g of ram, 32c/64t, Tesla P2 GPU, and a whopping 130TB of raw storage (before redundancy).

So- at 7:20am, the main inverter shuts down due to hitting its battery shut off limit. Of course, this means, my A/C and fan shuts off, causing me to wake up pretty quickly. The majority of the house is out- but, not my rack!

My rack is still plugged into my homemade 2.4Kwh UPS I built a few years back.

So, after getting up, grabbing my coffee, I went ahead and plugged in the generator, which got everything turned back on until the sun came back out. Once the sun came out, the steady 3-5kwh of solar PV power kept everything running, and put its extra juice back into the batteries for later.

During the day- the entire house, and rack of servers was able to run off of pure sunshine without issue.

Around an hour or ago, when the sunlight went away, I went ahead and plugged in the generator to get the batteries topped off for another night without grid power.

Home assistant automation yells at me when the batteries are full, to tell me to go and turn off the generator. When the batteries get low, it yells at me to go start the generator. (Literally- it talks to me via TTS).

That being said, I have 5 gals of gas in the generator, another 5 gals on standby. And, can always go and get more if needed. But- that should be enough to keep my entire lab running for the rest of the week. .. between generator power, and PV/Solar energy.

If- you are interested in an overview of how my solar setup works, its all documented here:

https://static.xtremeownage.com/pages/Projects/Solar-Project/

Edit- also, if https://xtremeownage.com/ and https://lemmyonline.com/ are still working- my Lab is still powered.
