They’ve actually put some of their own custom code and stuff into it, but no I don’t think it would be worth buying it. Using another UI achieves all of the tweaks they created.

Well you can’t base your ideas about how all of this works on anything if you’re only willing to use one frontend.

My guess is just that interest has been lost. The admin at pornlemmy.com is even trying to sell it off to someone.

I’ve always wondered this and wish I had an answer. But then again the answer is just that most people are followers. There’s way more copy cats and followers because it’s the easy thing to do. Having original thoughts, ideas, and following through takes actual work.
