I thought it was amusing that they were being produced basically concurrently. I've enjoyed both the books and the one season of the show, but I feel like I've experienced it and I'm ready to move on.

Having read the books and (presumably) watched the Netflix show, do you think the Chinese version is done well enough that it's worth another journey through the same story?

Definitely chaotic good energy. Big fan of his videos.

Oh man, you hit upon why it makes me twitch. Because this has always been thoroughly hypothetical for me I somehow never considered the other half of the social equation!

Yes, that's exactly it: if it's used as a way to unduly elevate themselves over others. That was the part that I was stuck on but couldn't articulate. Now I know what I would do if I ever ran into this situation (just call me mister, lol), so thanks for that.

I generally agree with the sentiment, but coded language is part and parcel of a compromised communication space. That it's thinly veiled only really speaks to the exact nature of algorithmic censorship.

What's your view on calling people Doctor in general?

On the one hand it's a title that you earn through a great deal of prolonged effort. On the other hand it's just a title, a label, and I don't feel like I should be under any obligation to refer to somebody by anything other than their name. But then what do you do if they introduce themselves as Doctor Smith or whatever?

In practice I just use the honorific because it's the socially acceptable thing to do, but I'm grumpy about it. I say this because I've at least heard of people who insist on being called doctor and it feels so douchy I don't want to give them the satisfaction.

2007, I think. I had recently moved and didn't have internet hooked up yet, so I bought BioShock as a physical disc so that I wouldn't have to wait. Imagine my frustration when I learned about the online-only authentication bullshit it used for DRM, so having the disc didn't even matter; without Internet I couldn't play the damn thing at all.

I bought GTA4 for like $8 during a Steam Sale shortly after it came out, back when Steam Sales were crazy good. An absolute steal for such a great game.

Hey, is it okay if there's a place where we're not being fucking advertised to all the time? Fuck off with this.

I hate how right you are. I guess what I'm really looking for is a way to recreate that magic, but an accessible shot of nostalgia every now and then would do just fine. I guess I'll look into clone hero and see.

Yeah, why the fuck don't we have a modern interpretation or a spiritual successor? (Please, no remastering.) I assume the answer is money, but I'm still disappointed.

(Look at me - pretending that this administration, or most of the rest of the government, charged as they are with checking and balancing the executive branch, has even the faintest concern for the law...)

Old habits die hard, I guess

Never had multi-user stalls or pissers, but I seem to recall a big round communal trough for high bathroom throughput. Everybody just kind of pissing in each other's general direction.
