Been a couple decades since I did much reading in this area, but as I recall, it was around the Vietnam war, when it was being used as a field anaesthetic.

Tbf, they only stopped using ketamine on humans because they got tired of people having alien encounters on the operating table.

I managed to make it through both in a weekend or so, but it was rough.
