A particular version of Linux Mint, the example you mentioned, is supported for 4 years, whereas Windows 10 was supported for 10 years

I know this is a definition question, but yes, Enterprise LTS versions of Windows 10 will be supported for 10 years. For normal versions, you will have to update to a newer Windows 10 version to be supported - just like Linux Mint.

Today, a lot of 10 users would upgrade to 11 if they could, but their older-but-still-fine hardware is simply being cut off from Windows support.

Technically, a lot of people was also "cut off" for Windows support with Windows 10, however, Windows 10 did not block you from upgrading anyway. Looking at the CPU requirements of Windows 10 1511, the Intel i3/5/7 types all required at least 5000 series or better from around 2015. Newer Windows 10 version cut out some of the 1511 supported CPUs, raising the minimum requirements. I think it was some of the CPUs from Microsoft's own Surface computers, that was kept in the supported list.

Microsoft should just let Windows 11 install with a big fat warning that you are running unsupported hardware, however this could have a negative experience when people run into features that does not work. But most of the way, people would be fine.

Jeg er selv en Lurpak-gris og det er vildt at se de udsving der sker i de priser. 15-35 kr er det normale det svinger.

Synes det lyder som en anden for for administrationshelvede (indsættes/fjernes/konverteres blå tog alt efter belastning og administration af billetter) + irritation af folk som skal sørge for at tage det rigtige tog. Tror mere at man bare må se hvad der sker og så indsætte flere tog når man finder ud af hvad de normale trafikmønstre bliver til. Måske problemet ikke er så stort med personer som vil drøne landet rundt og det mere er et problem at der kommer flere pendlere til. Det kunne måske være en idé at man stadig har pladsbilletter på de regionale toge, til dem som gerne vil sidde ned, f.eks. en familie som skal sidde samlet.

Haha yes, I had to go to client with a new desktop with Windows Vista... that only had 512 MB. It was swapping all the time and was useless and I looked like an idiot for bringing a defective computer that we had selected for him. Upgraded to 1 GB and it was fine.

A big part of the problem was 3rd party programs that was not ready. A big change was introduction of the User Account Control (UAC) that more or less started to force programs to behave better: Install into program file, save stuff in user profile, don't do dumb admin stuff if not needed, making programs start to behave more like they lived in a multi-user operating system. It was a change that had to be done and it was never going to be a good experience.

I think you underestimate how many testers and how much work actually goes into testing both Microsoft's own software and work with 3rd party software vendors to make sure their software worked. This has changed somewhat, with Windows 10 and forward, where you have a lot more beta testing in the public.

I agree that there should have been spent more time on testing Vista and given more time to 3rd party to test their stuff. However, 3rd party software and drivers took, in some instances, 1-2 years after Vista release, before they updated their stuff to work with Vista. There were just not a lot of companies interested in spending the money and time to make make it work as Vista got a (deserving) bad reception, but a big part of the problem was these companies. A chicken/egg situation.

Dit argument for at vi ikke skal have gratis offentlig transport er et det ville blive nedslidt mere? Hvorfor er det ikke et problem for Fredericia? https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/seneste/gratis-busser-i-fredericia

Vi ved ikke om det er et problem endnu, da det først går i drift i august i år.

Et argument imod er de ekstra passagerer der kommer til at benytte sig af den offentlige transport. Ikke for at tale ned til byer, som ikke er i top 10 på størrelse, men tænker at der kan være en forskel på størrelse af by / hvor mange der skal med offentlig transport. Jeg har absolut ingen viden om belægningen på busserne i Fredericia, men forestiller mig at den er mindre end busserne i København (min seneste relevante erfaring med busser). Min tanker går på, illustreret med fiktive tal, at hvis offentlig transport var fyldt 50% op før det blev gratis og det går op til 80%, så kan systemet stadig bære det. Men hvis de allerede er fyldt 80% op og man så gør det gratis, så ender man med et behov for 120%, hvilket kræver investering i mere offentlig transport.

Misforstå mig ikke, jeg ville ikke have noget imod at betale lidt ekstra i skat for gratis offentlig transport. Men jeg kan godt se nogle udfordringer på nogle strækninger og knudepunkter, hvis der kom 20% flere folk. Og det kan også være at jeg tager fejl, at i spidsbelastning er alle dem som vil tage offentlig transport allerede med bus og tog og man kun vil se flere passagerer uden for spidsbelastningerne og man derved kan klare det med et par enkelte ekstra afgange.

Tænker at nogle vil synes det er sjovt at køre landet rundt uden nogen egentlig grund. Hvor stor belastning (fyldt transport) det vil have på systemet, det ved jeg ikke, men i spidsbelastning er der allerede fyldt godt op på nogle strækninger. Bemærk at det er blot en tanke om som kan være en udfordring, men ikke noget der gør at jeg taler imod at offentlig transport blev gjort gratis eller meget billigt.

smør er også blevet dyrt

Jeg forstår ikke hvorfor smør er så dyrt. Hvad i produktionen af smør er steget så meget i pris? Kan forstå kaffe og chokolade da de er hård ramt på høsten, men hvor meget er mælk steget i pris? Eller er jeg blevet blind på hvor dyr mælk er? Kan godt huske at mælk har været 5 kr en gang, men smør er da steget meget mere, sådan procentmæssigt?

Opdatering: Fik lige kigget grafen igennem i artiklen og kan se at smør åbenbart er steget mest! Jeg må være blind.

Ubuntu er britisk, Mint er drevet af et “online fællesskab” med den (franske?) opstarter af distributionen i spidsen (uden at jeg ved nærmere), RedHat er amerikansk og ejet af IBM. SUSE er tysk.

That, and it had a lot of technical changes that broke a lot of drivers and programs. All the technical changes also had lots of bugs that needed to be fixed. And also, Microsoft OK’ed Vista for 512 MB RAM when it should have had at least 1 GB.

When everything started to smooth out, bugs fixed, drivers and programs updated, and computers came with 2GB+ RAM, then Microsoft released Windows 7, based on all of this, and that made Windows 7 shine.

People say that Windows Vista should never had been made but without it, Windows 7 would have suffered the same fate as Vista.
