Judging from the AI-generated picture above I assume it is because IT is an undead nightmare hellscape where you are shackled to ancient technology that sucks your life-blood out of you until you inevitably fuse into it and become part of the unending doom machine that is late-stage capitalism

Idk, I'd assume if I just delete the credit card and they can't charge it, they'll just keep sending me bills with increasingly insane late fees, effectively putting me in huge debt over time

Not at all. It has OTA updates that download and install automatically in the background, and apply on the next reboot.

You could look into CalyxOS. I don't know if you'd consider installing an alternative System on your phone, but the FP4 is one of the few ones that let you unlock and relock the bootloader. Mine has been on Android 13 for a while now with very few software issues.
