Whoa, this is cool. I've never had any idea how SHA works.

Have you modified your stride at all? Do you run with a forefoot strike now, and did you already do that before switching to barefoot shoes?

I bought a pair of barefoot shoes recently. If you haven't heard about this type of shoe, it's kind of a loosely-defined category, but generally means:

  1. It's wider than a typical shoe. Your feet should not be constrained by the "walls" of the shoe.
  2. The materials are thin and flexible. It should not be very rigid or provide much support.
  3. The sole should be flat, with no elevated heel.

Barefoot shoes have gained an almost religious following. I'm not a full convert, but I have enjoyed wearing mine at the gym -- for the most part.

I don't really need many features in a shoe; I do a pretty basic strength training workout. Like, the kind of workout that many people wear Converse for. And for that, they're great. Actually, really great. The sole is very thin and flat, which feels good for squats. And when doing things like lunges, I feel like they have forced me to improve my balance and stability, since the shoe itself is not helping you at all in that department.

I've also started running recently, after not doing that for many years. I have also enjoyed wearing these while running, but with the caveat that I'm running on a soft, rubber surface track. I think if I was running on pavement, I couldn't wear these. By design, they have very little cushion, and I think that would be painful if I wasn't running on a soft surface. In fact, even just walking down the street with them was a little jarring the first day, although I've gotten used to it now (and might have softened my stride a little, too).

The pair I bought are the Xero Dillon Canvas. I don't buy into all of the health benefits that the barefoot crowd often claims you get from this type of footwear, but I have definitely liked them for the gym. I'd buy them for the same reason that you'd buy a pair of Converse: they're thin and flat, but these are even thinner and flatter. I also like that they're easy to carry around. They take up very little space in the gym bag.

Aesthetically, at first they look strange because of their wider toe box, but that's just because they're wider than what you're used to seeing on your feet. That feeling soon wore off, and I think they look like just plain old sneakers now, especially when viewed from the side. I doubt other people would even notice anything different about them.

Specific to the pair I bought: I got the white ones, and the canvas material gets dirty very easily. But I found that they're easy to clean with soap and water. (See a before/after photo here.)

Has anyone else tried a pair of barefoot shoes before? What did you think?

I keep getting this game and the upcoming Shinobi game confused with each other, but they both look amazing. And I do mean that literally, with great pixel art for Ninja Gaiden and a kind of hand-drawn Flash game style for Shinobi. Great time to be a fan of... retro-styled 2D reboots of ninja-themed franchises, I guess?

I have too many games in my backlog right now, but I'll probably have to pick these up anyway and move them to the top of the queue.

None for me this week. Is anyone reading Batman: The Long Halloween right now? I keep noticing it in the store and am curious about it.

[–] tuckerm@feddit.online 2 points 1 week ago

Nice. I had borrowed a friend's physical copy of Crysis, and that's how I played it back in the day.

Yeah, I had forgotten how slow an optical drive was, and how that was usually the limiting factor. I installed Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear from the original CD a couple days ago, and it took about 20 minutes to install on my current PC. I'm pretty sure that's about how long it took in 1999, too.

Downloading it from Steam takes about 10 seconds.

Very cool. I've never backed mine up; I should do that. What game was it last week?

[–] tuckerm@feddit.online 2 points 1 week ago

Piracy hysteria was at an absolute fever pitch in 2007 -- those online activations are what make me think that much of my physical collection won't be playable anymore.

Oblivion was also one that I owned physically. I just assumed that I had also acquired it on Steam by now, but it looks like I haven't. Also great memories with Oblivion. I think it's still my 4th or 5th most-played game. (I have to guess, based on remembering the number of hours that Xfire said I had back in the day, which is a whole nother nostalgia trip right there, lol.)

True, fair point.

Oh dang, that is a good idea.

I want to say a steak, but if I had an infinite supply of perfect steak available to me, I would probably die of a heart attack in about a year.

So instead I'll say crispy, corn-starch-battered stir fried marinated tofu. Tastes very good, and I usually fail to plan ahead for marinating it, plus the corn starch can sometimes make a mess, so having it magically made for me would be nice.

Like many people, I've been thinking about physical media lately, and how our entertainment items -- movies, albums, books -- used to be things that sat on a shelf that someone else could see and say, "Hey I like this thing on your shelf."

PC games were one of those things, once. I have a few. And I've scrounged them up from their various moving boxes and parents' houses to see if they still work.

Does anyone here still play a game from an optical drive? A game where your regularly-played copy isn't the Steam version?

For me, Morrowind was the last game that I was still playing on a disc. I have newer games on discs, but just played those once or twice and then put them back on the shelf. But I was still playing Morrowind from a CD up until 2023, when it went on sale on Steam for $1, so I bought it. I almost didn't get it, since I liked the fact that I was still playing a game on a CD.

I plan on taking inventory of which games still work and what it takes to install them today.

What were (are?) some of your favorites?

The Sonic Adventure site is my favorite, especially the blog. (This is a link to a blog post, https://tuckerm.us/posts/some_classic_video_game_sites, in case that isn't obvious in the Lemmy UI.)

I bought this pair of lightweight, plain canvas shoes for the gym a couple months ago. Functionally, I like them. I also like their very plain aesthetic, but the canvas material holds on to dirt like nothing else. It's not a smooth material; it's very porous, so it's not like you can brush dirt off of them, either. It gets trapped right in there.

Today I tried cleaning them with Fels-Naptha soap and a bristle brush. It worked pretty well.

Another one where I left it and came back to it later to come up with the word.

Recordings are posted one day later on NHK's Youtube channel, so while day 3 is going on right now, here's day 2:

I just found https://lex.games/six (made by @lexfri@hachyderm.io) a few days ago. It's a good one! Sometimes it's very difficult to find a real word that fits the available squares, so for some of them in previous days I just left it alone for a couple of hours to let a word come to me. Today's was unusually fast, my previous days were like an hour or three, haha.

I just started reading comics a few months ago, so I'm fairly new to this.

I enjoyed the Injustice video games, and I've heard the comics were great, so I figure I should read them. The comic book store near me has the individual volumes for Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3. But they also have the Injustice Compendium, which has everything in one book. And the compendium is absolutely gigantic: literally like a phonebook. It just seems like it would be unpleasant to read, impossible to carry around, and most of the pages would have a severe curve when they're open from the inflexible spine.

Have you bought one of these before? Did you prefer it over having individual volumes?
