ChromeOS has a massive market (10%-20% depending on who you ask) and that's basically linux with a chrome frontend.

So it really depends on what you mean by 'year of the desktop' as you can spin the definition either way.. either it'll never happen or it happened years ago.

My theory is society has a suppressing affect on these things.. It's not nice to be a nazi, or to mistreat people you don't like, so these things get hidden.

Algorithms do the opposite. Now someone with Nazi tendencies is surrounded by them and encouraged. Posts hating trans people get pushed by algorithms because they drive engagement (even if all the initial responses are negative, it's still engagement to the algorithm, which will then boost the 'popular' post).

Things like lemmy and mastodon don't do that and end up nicer places as a result.

I handle it by spinning up an lxd container to try new apps.. then they have the whole machine to do what they like, and if the install doesn't work or I hate the app, just delete the entire container.

lemmy was one of the harder ones to deal with because it needs docker.. I have a special profile that runs docker in a container for apps like that (I never run docker bare, it f..s around with the firewalling and breaks stuff).

Tesla bascailly pulled the S and X out of the UK market and from what I've seen on the forums people aren't interested in a left hand drive car. Not even sure why they even offered to sell them, unless they were worried about being sued by all the people with deposits.

That's literally what I no compete says, nonsensical as it sounds.

I had one in a contract that said I'm not allowed to work for any competitors or suppliers for 5 years. Totally unenforceable, likely illegal.

And since we regularly sent out for pizza, that means theoretically I couldn't even work for pizza hut...

TBH I think threads owes more to instagram than twitter.. which makes total sense given that Meta owns both. They even share user lists.. The similarity with twitter is they're both primarily text based..

You’d be surprised how short the pipeline from gardening, to arts and crafts, to crunchiness, to antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, new world orders, and all that bs is

That's about 9 posts on a normal reddit thread..

'Why are we paying all this money out when we could just save the money and never upgrade' -- some manager, somewhere.

PDA - I had a WinCE thing I picked up, never really used it

DVD Recorder - Only in my PC.. 'backed up' lots of movies

WebTV - I think my current TV still runs WebOS..

3d TV - had one, wasn't suckered into the £150 active glasses and got a passive set where the glasses were about 10p. Had fun with it but it never caught on.

Raspberry Pi - Loads of the things..

Internet radio player - I guess my car counts.

Typical tabloid battery rubbish..

745 miles, assume 5 miles/kwh which is not unreasonable. That's a 3.7Mwh battery (which my back of the envelope calcs would weight about 5 tonnes).

Charge that in 10 minutes you'd have to feed it from a 22Mw charger. So the output of a decent size offshore wind turbine. Per charger.

I haven't got a clue how bloody heavy the connector would have to be.. it wouldn't be CCS, I can tell you that..
