Oh so that's what that does!

Yeah, that part is a little confusing. Because this is a link aggregation site, it's currently set up to show the domain of whatever link is in the thread. But if it's just a text post, because it's being brought over here it self-reports that we're looking at kbin.social.
If you have the top bar enabled from settings you can see where you're currently looking at the top right.
If you have the top bar enabled, you can see it at the top on the right hand side.
There's a decent chance it will. The fediverse is—generally speaking—a fairly friendly and welcoming place. That's in part to it's decentralized nature and individual moderation tools. Bad actors can be blocked on an individual level (I just blocked /u/donaldtrump last night because I do not want to see stupid parody accounts and just like that he's gone) as well as on an instance level for anyone not following the rules.
Each instance has their own rules about how to behave, so the bigots and whatnot get booted if they cause problems. Eventually they find an equally terrible server that will have them and once they start up again, that instance can be defederated, which is basically like cutting off the bridge to their island… no way to communicate. Eventually they end up alone or with equally terrible people on other instances.
That's not to say that the fediverse doesn't have it's share of problems or is perfect, but we're working hard to try and keep this a decent place to be.
I started on Mastodon and switched to Calckey, picked up Pixelfed and was hanging out for a few months. Saw Rexxit was going to happen and hopped on here about a month ago. So I guess I'm not your typical migrant.
The fediverse exploded after Twitter became a dumpster fire. This is another huge migration, so the numbers are going up quite a bit again. I'm excited to see what we build with such a large number of new people!
Consuming less and contributing more, checking out magazines that I have never hear of before and mainly helping to build a new community.
Keep that positive attitude! That's exactly what we need here. This is a new world that we're building, let's make it a good one!
I showed up to the fediverse last September (had tours around years ago but never stayed). Generally speaking, the fediverse is a very chill and accepting place as long as you're not a dick, and stay respectful of others. It really does remind me of the web in the old days before we handed over control to like 5 companies.
I encourage you to explore beyond this one corner when you feel ready. Maybe none of the rest of it will interest you, maybe it will. But it's a cool thing we're building!
I live near 205… I'm okay with harsher penalties. Hopefully this also applies to racing on the interstate though it seems to be more in the neighborhoods.
Do they give a reason why they won't?
Huh, that is strange. I wonder if that one isn't federating for some reason. I can find @canada@lemmy.ml
but @canada@lemmy.ca
turns up nothing. Neither does https://lemmy.ca/c/canada 🤔
Edit: I forgot there are issues with federation right now because of the cloudflare check. It should only be temporary. See Ernest's post
It might be turned off in settings. I'm getting notifications.
