I'm gently nudging my kid towards Linux though. But i have a feeling he will swap as soon as he encounters resistance or technical issues. Such as not being able to play the "new" game with his friends.

I'm on Windows because the games i want to play doesn't work on linux. Simple as that.
Nationalism becomes unhealthy in such endeavours. So no, it doesn't apply.
Much like cheering for your local sports team is ok. Going to the other town to fight them isn't. But just because you cheer on your team and want the to win, doesn't implicate you for the actions of others.

It's a nice outlet for my competitive nature. I get close to zero enjoyment from single player games or pve.

I only play competitive online. Kernel anti-cheat does not work on Linux.
