It's a global epidemic. That's why it's our responsibility to stomp out fascists and refuse their platform at every opportunity.

Definitely, astroturfing/Cambridge analytica/Russian bot farms coming up on the 2016 US election were the major causes of a shift in the paradigm. The actual results of the election and Brexit then influenced a strong divisive change in society globally. The pandemic brought even more people online who were dropped right into this chaotic chapter in Internet/cultural history.

Gonna be some really interesting studies in the future looking at how all of this played out.

The question that remains to be answered is, are the normies that moved to Reddit responsible for what it became? Or was it a product of the corporate profit driven manipulation of the platform? Time will tell..

Edit: It's worth noting, I don't mean to say 'normies' a a pejorative term, just the most casual way to differentiate the more tech-savvy, active early adopters that I find many people currently using the platform are, versus those who are simply doom scrolling content on social media.

Killer Mike said it best,

Don’t criticize rioting because I understand it. But after the fires die down: organize, strategize and mobilize. Like Ferguson, you have an opportunity to start anew. I don’t have a solution because whoever’s there will have to come up with it. But we need community relations: Riots are the language of the unheard.

Also the fact that campaign wasn't even available on launch. I was pretty excited for some co-op campaign but never even went back after they implemented it months later.

Every instance owner should be looking to sign this. Every time you see Meta bullshit posted, please repost this. Also idk how to tag people and I know he's super busy as of late but calling on Ruud@lemmy.world to get on board with this as well. With the ever growing size of his community it is his responsibility to help us protect the Fediverse.

"i am an instance admin/mod on the fediverse. by signing this pact, i hereby agree to block any instances owned by meta should they pop up on the fediverse. project92 is a real and serious threat to the health and longevity of fedi and must be fought back against at every possible opportunity"

Just add a little nuclear winter and we're good. So there might be a little radioactive fallout, that's just a problem for the poors to deal with. Billionaires will be okay in their acre sized underground bunker clubs and that's what's important.

Except the fascists. Fuck the fascists, they can go back to the holes they crawled out of.

Yes, submit a GDPR/CCPA (Reddit is in California, so they are legally required to serve these request to anyone 'protected' by US laws) request. It's expensive and time consuming for them. It should also help you confirm if all of your data has actually been deleted. They have 30 days to comply with the request.

My plan is, one I get my data and confirm everything is deleted, to submit another request if any data was found and will repeat this until all of the data is gone. Only then will I finally submit one more out of spite followed by immediately deleting the account. Honestly not sure how that will affect them processing it but I'd imagine it should then indeed confirm the account itself is 'deleted'.
