It sounds like you're conflating Bitcoin with cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is power hungry. Not all crypto is proof-of-work, and actually, most aren't. Not all crypto has insane transaction fees, that's mostly a Bitcoin thing. These are massive issues with Bitcoin which is why I'm surprised anyone still values Bitcoin at all.

Trust me it's not the designers choosing to do it this way. There's management above them saying "hey this other company makes them put in their phone numbers, it must be for SOMETHING, we should too"

Tree isn't necessarily US-based, it's just hunting-based. Treeing an animal is just chasing it up a tree, often with dogs. I'd say that's usually a more British thing than US tbh
For images with large blocks of solid colors and no gradients, frequently the opposite is true. Screenshots and avatars with solid(transparent) backgrounds are often smaller as png.
It drives me nuts seeing things like tweets (white and black text) being shared with crazy jpeg artifacting. They'd be so much smaller and so much less ugly as png
