They had me with

"Threads feels like when a local restaurant you enjoy opens a location in an airport.

It feels like a Twitter alternative you would order from Brookstone."

Perfectly captures the banal uncanny valley of it all

And, centralization of users and communities to any one instance increases the risks of power grabs and attempts to monetize

It really is weird to see the default to tribalism rear its head as it's happening

From that thread, Fedinauts might be my fave. Relatively instance agnostic and keeps that space age, optimistic federated future vibe going

Ooh, fedinauts is good. Definitely agree to prioritize something which doesn't favor a particular instance and rather emphasizes the idea of the fediverse. Also, the ~nauts variations also connote a sort of star trek federation vibe, which suits this whole endeavor.

No shade to lemmy instances, but definitely not Lemmites. There's an unhealthy trend right now to reduce the fediverse to just Lemmy (and lemmy.world, more specifically) that we should not encourage.

Will try, thanks

Only thing I consistently don't see well done are parks and other green spaces, where the boundaries are ill defined or missing. Other than that, also my mainstay

This person gets it

And users will facilitate that process by glomming on to certain instances thinking that it matters to which they belong

Reddit became part of the shitty second season / crappy sequel era of the internet.

Also, can we not call the fediverse "Lemmy"? It's.a disservice to what we all are vying for here and sets us up to land right back into the same bullshit.

That's one significant impasse: YouTube has become a place for content generated with the goal of being paid. It initially wasn't, and need not be. The "in" for an alternative could be simply in catering to those who motivation isn't primarily financial. Along with an audience who a different motivation and expectation around content consumption. Just as with the fediverse.

And, we would be better served doing away with the idea of replacing platforms like YouTube and rather providing bespoke alternatives. We'll succeed when we stop trying to replace Tesco with Walmart. Which can be difficult, currently, when many users have probably only experienced living in a town where all your shopping is done there and never known a thriving downtown of small businesses.
