When college leaves you in crippling debt, jobs pay pennies, and inflation has eaten up all real wage gains, this feels inevitable.

Yeah 80 engineers and millions of dollars in budget? Pathetic. I’m an iOS developer by trade and if you’d asked me to draw up a project proposal for the official Reddit app, I probably would have told you I needed 3-5 engineers. But 80, that’s just unreal.

I’m an iOS user so I only know of Sync by reputation, but my understanding is that it’s up there with Apollo as the definitive way to experience Reddit on its platform. The fact that Reddit’s 2000 employees couldn’t remotely approximate the superior experiences of Sync and Apollo, both developed by one guy, is frankly bewildering. I’ve worked in big tech too as an engineer so on one level I get it, but we’re not taking about rocket science here. The sheer manpower and budgets involved should have meant that the official clients would be light years ahead… and yet 😁

I finally did this today. Well, my instance accepts applications, but right now it’s only me, and I want to keep it small. It wasn’t too hard to deploy, took maybe an hour if you have some Linux knowledge. As for costs, I launched it on a VM with Vultr.com, one of the cheapest ones at $8/month. So far it’s running very well and the CPU usage is below 30% all the time. The benefit of being tiny, I guess. Anyway, what I’m saying is.. go for it! It’s relatively easy and cheap.

They should do an April fools’ sale where they reduce the price by 1 cent

Why? New mosquito species? Warming climate?

Are you looking for us across-the-Fediverse people to participate, or is this really only intended for @beehaw users?

I like to think of him as more of a lizard man than Android, but you’re on the right track!

Zuck is too much of a wolf in turd’s clothing. Wait no, that’s not right. A bastard in a turd’s clothing. Wait.

Yea, same. Really liking the content and friendly atmosphere over here. Looking increasingly viable as a replacement, especially if you believe in quality over quantity.

Yea, same. The protests were enough to get me to delete my main account and spend no more than 5 minutes a day on Reddit, whereas before this I probably spend 2-3 hours a day on it. Nowadays channeling all my energy into Lemmy. Really liking the content and friendly atmosphere over here!
