Wake up, Mr. Freeman. Wake up and… smell the ashes.

This does actually happen more than you think - it’s why all the world’s football and tennis stars miraculously decide to move to Monte Carlo as soon as they hit the riches. Which is exactly why we need a coordinated tax policy at an EU, EEA or global level, to make sure that you can’t just choose a neighbouring country and pay an order of magnitude less.

Coincidentally, Elvis’ is only the second best song titled “Love Me Tender”. Nothing could ever be better than this absolute, uh, masterpiece

Basically this. Russia and its ruling party have big problems and so scapegoating a minority group offers a way to misdirect anger that would otherwise be aimed at the government. You may recognise this exact dynamic from your own country’s local right-wing party.

Pro tip: open a checking account with a brokerage, like Charles Schwab or Fidelity. Everything is free with ridiculously generous terms: no fees, free check books, ATM fee refunds, excellent foreign exchange rates on your debit card. They’ll blow any credit union out of the water.

The reason is that these companies make their money on stock accounts (via trading commissions and the like), and view these checking accounts as just a value-add / loss-leader to get you to park your investments with them. And they’re rolling in dough from options trading and shit like that, so the terms on the loss-leaders are really good.

I’ve had a checking account with Schwab for like 20 years, and they’ve never so much as whispered changing this dynamic.

Will he be allowed to enact any reform? I was under the impression that the supreme leader is effectively dictator and able to overrule any policy, and the president is more a logistical administrator.

Truss as a telly commentator would be brilliant considering she can barely deliver a normal sentence!

Found the German! The English equivalent of “der Zug ist schon abgefahren“ would be “that ship has sailed”. Which is pretty funny if you think about the geography of the UK versus the German speaking realm.
