tl;dr A network operator can perform a MitM attack on the built-in updater's call-out checking for updates by faking the Notepad++ update website, telling it a new version is available at and then downloading and running the malware

It requires a malicious network operator, or preexisting malware on the host.

I'm currently reading We Were Eight Years In Power by Ta-Nahisi Coates. I'm not going to finish it. I've read most of his Atlantic articles and I buy the thesis he's weaving, but I feel like we're past the point where awareness matters (or that I am insufficiently aware). People know the bad they're doing and want it. We're in the activist moment.

I'm next going to start Shift by Hugh Howey because I need some entertainment out of my reading.

Failure of leadership. That's what the history books are going to say about this era.

I've had Fedora on a Thinkpad X300, Thinkpad T420 (what I'm typing on right now), and Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 GA402RK. The last has a Mediatek MT7922, unlike the prior 2 with Intel wireless -- and they all have worked flawlessly.

I keep a small Win11 partition on my 2022 gaming laptop in case I need to take a cert exam or use a gov website, and I booted it for updating for the first time in 6 months. It took over 6 hours and 6 reboots to update! At one point, it was going bu-ding every minute from random notifications so I had to mute it.

Meanwhile, my 2012 Thinkpad T420 needed a full Fedora version upgrade, and that finished in 15 minutes.

No wonder MS is losing users

America has ceased to be a society trying to solve any systemic problems. Instead, it's a society where everyone is trying to systemically take from one another, usually the powerful from everyone else.

Guerilla action is really the only path forward. Build a parallel state because the actual state only serves corporate greed.

Two things are always true about Rand Paul:

  • He clutches his pearls about the unethical behavior of his party and how it has morally lost its way

  • He will only actually take measures or vote to oppose its actions when his protest is symbolic and won't interfere with the party's agenda

He's basically the male Susan Collins.

Data removal services are always double dipping - selling you protection from themselves. Clearly a racket.

For myself, I make sure I've done my due diligence before I might accuse someone of dishonesty, rather than making a minimum effort.

I've burned out on LKML and many many other parts of the FOSS world. It's exhausting. As such, I will not be working on Linux for asus device. It's not something I can devote huge chunks of time to for free anymore.

Thank you everyone who has donated something over the last years.

Europe needs to realize that it's on its own against Russia. The US will equivocate on every topic to aid Putin.

Toyota is behind everyone else on electric vehicles, so any politician that slows or stops EVs is a friend to Toyota.

Also, green policies favor the adoption of mass transit and other viable alternatives to driving, which is again a danger to Toyota's bottom line.
