While when I visited the UK in October/November way back, every geezer over the age of 50 ran around in shorts. Even when it was like 10C. I've no idea what drives them to make such decisions.

More context;

They live in earthquake area, there was a small one there 180 years ago, they're used to the ground rumbling beneath their legs. Or beds.

One guy didn't awake and notice a boulder rolling down one of the hills, ground shaking his entire house. Hit his bedroom straight on and killed him instantly, didn't wake him up at all. That's how hardy they are.
