I think you are underestimating the added complexity and cost. Radio telescopes aren't like optical ones, they are huge arrays of dishes covering a vast area, and a key aspect to them is that they are relatively cheap. Space telescopes cost billions, last less time, cost far more to run, and often can't (reasonably) be repaired.

The unfortunate truth is that we will end up picking between furthering our knowledge and furthering private wealth, because even if we put some in space, it would be prohibitively expensive to match what we have on earth.

CachyOS has been very good for me for a similar purpose

Work isn't the only value to society - they can be a part of their community, do art, or anything else. Everyone wants to engage with the world to some extent, and thay is the value they add.

The question in my mind is how long can a universal income be put off as more gets automated? How many will fall through the cracks before something is done?

I have two and they have had endless connection issues. Also, the DAC in splitters is terrible, so this requires a USB-C splitter followed by an external DAC. It's pretty unwieldy.

Also, on my previous phone without a jack the USB-C port started having charging issues after a couple of years due to wear. I'd be less annoyed about it if they had multiple USB-C ports, but a single port device is a bad idea in general.

That sounds like a conspiracy theory. Insects are a more eco friendly source of protein than cattle, and cattle might become more expensive due to the effects global warming and the potential taxes that could be placed on emissions, but there are plenty of other protein sources and there isn't some big plan.

No it won't, or it already does. AI is a meaningless term used to sell bullshit, so can we please use better definitions? Machine learning models will? Generative ML? Stuff hosted by a large company? There's no way they're counting all the small ML models all around the world, and sometimes (sadly, rarely) "AI" can save energy vs the alternative. How has everyone collectively lost their ability to think when it comes to this shit?

That replies upon the definition of "mountain", amongst other things, which has a consensus but isn't something that is absolute. I agree that there is an objective nature to reality (though that can be argued too but I don't see the value of doing so). I also agree with the opinion that Mt. Erebus exists because we are sharing an understanding of what is around us and agree on the evidence that comes from objective reality. However, you stating it makes it an opinion. It is an opinion based on evidence.

Personally, I think that there is an objective reality, but everything has to pass through our senses and understanding, so anything that filters out the other side is opinion. I don't think facts are that absolute, but it's a convenient way to say "this opinion has so much evidence to support it that I am confident it is true", so calling things facts has value.

People (unfortunately) believe that things are facts without them being true, or due to them being a decent approximation, all the time. The thing that matters is the weight of evidence behind the opinion, as not all opinions are equal. I think that dismissing something as an opinion is silly, but dismissing one for lack of evidence or the fact it is subjective is valid.

I disagree but also agree with you — I think you and the quote are talking about slightly different things.

Facts do exist, but what you hear from others is still an opinion. Those opinions may align with facts or not, be better evidenced or less, but it is overwhelming evidence that allows us to confidently state a fact (and potentially still be wrong). I think he is correct because objective reality, while real, is observed through our imperfect understanding, senses, language, etc.
