The Ones Who ~~Left for~~ Walk Away From Omelas. A 19-20 page short story about what a "utopia" truly is. (Yes, yes, "we live in an society")

Her non-fiction essays on writing, and reflecting on her body of work are also very good. She was an incredibly forward thinking writer, and one of my favourite authors of all time.

Personally, I wouldn't start with Wizard of Earthsea, that book was published in 1968 and definitely has the prose and flow modern readers are not as used to, especially for the fantasy genre.

I read Left Hand of Darkness for school, but it was The Dispossessed plus her non-fiction essays that got me into her. Omelas is also a good short story starting point, and I think it's only 20 pages.

Thanks for the clarification, I only saw an abridged clip of MTG's original comment and AOC looking frustrated, so I thought the comments were towards her and not Crockett.

If one of the best speculative fiction authors to live only needs 5 hours of work a day to create The Left Hand of Darkness and the Earthsea series, then maybe it's something worth exploring.

Most of us work 8 hours a day and probably produce nothing "valuable" except shareholder profits so...

I mean she started it, it's a response from another Congresswoman after MTG attacked AOC's appearance.

This is so sad. I bet Alexa can't even play Despacito anymore if I ask her to.

Ok am I wrong or was this not what Google Assistant used to be in the 2010s?

It's so interesting that there are comments about how people can mute/block people if they get harassed, but nothing about the people doing the actual unhinged harassment. It seems personal responsibility only should be for the victims of harassment...

On the topic itself, I actually know someone who works at Riot that is working on their "player management" tools, and the amount of data they have driving these is fascinating. The datasets they have are global, and aside from Vanguard, apparently there are certain toxicity trends that are so niche (in the Chinese servers, for example), you have to tune for the other server data sets for it (they weren't really clear on how this works).

I really wish I could see what the backend of this tech is like, very few games have 10+ years of player and esports data to train their LLM/AI models.

I'm going to assume TurboTax is an American thing, and that's insane that you're willingly using something that you think is selling your income, taxable earnings, and government information to advertisers.

That is NOT a reasonable expectation for most of the world that Google operates in, including California with it's data protection laws, which once again is what this article is talking about.

You can just RTFA, it's literally in the first three sentences:

Filing a proposed class-action suit in California, Katherine Wilson has accused Google of using Google Analytics and DoubleClick trackers on the California DMV site to unlawfully obtain information about her personal disability without her consent.

This, Wilson argued, violated the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), as well as the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA), and impacted perhaps millions of drivers who had no way of knowing Google was collecting sensitive information shared only for DMV purposes.

You don't think Google is tracking you when you're filing your taxes online, do you?

Interesting, thanks so much for your reply! I'll have to dig more into this as my knowledge of the politics of Desert Storm is quite shallow as a non-American.

The Democrat's strategy to appeal to their base really seems to be, "Look, we're not as bad at the other guys." And they really aren't realizing that that isn't enough, because it's not just about Israel/Palestine anymore. I really don't think the people who are also repeating this party line (including the ones on Lemmy) are realizing how out of touch this sentiment is especially the younger Millennials/Gen Z.

I've seen my friends get attacked, arrested, and get criminal records from the university encampments and protests, and nothing was done to protect them. In their eyes, Trump would never protect them, but neither did Biden or any other Democrat in power. How can they be trusted to protect the people in the future? Seen from this lens, I don't think it's unreasonable to think that there might be people out there who find voting for Biden unpalatable.
