The only thing I really feel bad for from this is the small town food banks/animal welfare societies/sanctuaries that were able to find alternative sources of incomes through Tiktok via their partner programs and through a wider audience. Apparently Instagram doesn't pay as well, and Youtube shorts are abysmal for discovery.

I used to volunteer at an animal shelter, and my city dropped funding for them in 2023. Tiktok donations helped a lot more than you'd think. Highly encouraged people reading this to drop some food/donations off at your shelter of choice if you have any to spare.

Hoping they shut down and open source their algorithm. They already released part of it on github, apparently, but I haven't had a chance to look at it. Would like it if I could somehow use it for a personal Loops server in the future.

Part of the Tiktok algo is already released on Github. I'm hoping instead of selling they actually make everything open.

The title says "Life of an IT Guy", so that's the association OP wants us to make

I'm assuming it's their work bag...?

Everyone talking about the pain of being on call, I thought the comic was about how much IT guys love their backpacks...

I don't work in IT.

This is from my former coworker who's father was approached as an investor for Bytedance, so grain of salt.

But apparently the current CEO of Bytedance, Shou Zi Chew, interned at Meta and offered Zuckerberg a chance to invest into Bytedance in 2013 when he was gathering investors (assuming they'd be the American arm of the multinational). Zuck refused, saying that he didn't think short form video is going to go anywhere, and basically laughed Zi Chew out of the room.

Fast forward to 2024, and Meta is spending the most money lobbying to get Tiktok to sell to a US company, with Meta trying to argue that they have the best infrastructure to "manage the technology" and data from Tiktok, Capcut, Lemon8, etc.

If all of this is true, I would also say "Fuck You" to Mark Cuckerberg and shut down the servers too. I mean, why the hell else am I on Lemmy if not for a CEO saying I can't have my app?

edit: Oh how did I forget, Zuck was trying to buy Musical.ly in 2016, learned Mandarin, went to China to kiss CPC ass, and still got blocked on the buy by Bytedance.. It's 100% personal for everyone involved here.

I'm not a China felater, but I trust VERY few Western outlets to have unbiased coverage of any Chinese-related topics. They can't even get the app's name right in the headline.

I've used it in the past (to test my English-Mandarin translator project for school), and there are as many naked (and gay) men/women on it as Instagram.

MFW I read anything regarding Elon Mush:
