Weekly thread for any and all career, learning and general guidance questions. Thinking of taking a training or going for a cert? Wondering how to level up your career? Wondering what NOT to do? Got other questions? This is the time and place to ask!

Experimenting with a new regular thread. Wanna chat about something non-infosec amongst those of us who frequent /c/cybersecurity? Here’s your chance! (Keep things civil & respectful please).

Have a great weekend!

A request for any security engineers who are Lead/Staff/L6 level or above (e.g. Senior Staff, Principal, Sr. Principal, Architect, etc...). What advice would you give to senior engineers (and below) on things they should learn or prioritize for "leveling up" technically?

I understand a lot of what goes into promotions is not necessarily technical, i.e. politics, visibility, being on high-impact projects, etc... but strictly on the more technical plane, what skills, tools, trainings, frameworks, etc... would you recommend?

Thanks!!

Weekly thread to discuss whatever you’re working on, big or small, at work or in your free time.

How are you liking Obsidian? What did you use before Obsidian?

What do you think of it so far?

Not sure I understand the question. The cert is a series of classes or a single class? Are you asking if you should just challenge the exam versus going through the course?

Try. It to feel that way. If anything infosec (and “hacker culture at large) is unique thanks to the fact that we are “non-traditional”. Use this to your advantage and don’t give up!

Try asking around in some infosec Discord communities too. (Some listed here https://shellsharks.com/getting-into-information-security#online-communities.) A lot of internship programs take place in the summer which is now ending. Good luck on the hunt!

My old work place had a relatively progressive training policy and a decently healthy budget. The real beauty of it was that the budget was a departmental pool. The IT department did NOT take a lot of training so those few of us who did want to take advantage of it had access to a huge pool of money. Think, 10 people accessing money meant for 100 people kinda thing…

If your UX is bad in favor of better security, your users will tend to find ways to circumvent your security haha. So good thing to keep in mind.

Rather than Google it, can you ELI5 what you’re using Stow for? =)

I’ve captured a bunch of training sites you can peruse https://shellsharks.com/online-training. If you’re into OSINT, familiarize yourself with some more OSINT tools, I’ve captured some here https://shellsharks.com/infosec-tools.

I share this link a lot but it’s really the best advice I have for getting into the field. https://shellsharks.com/getting-into-information-security. It takes some persistence for sure but the industry needs new blood. You CAN absolutely do it. Start small and build up core skills. Being able to “code malware” is something you can worry about much later down the road. Work on coding smaller projects, learn networking and OS basics, etc… Good luck and come back here as you have more questions!
