I've done renegade runs dozens of times where I'm a dick to most people, but my crew is hard. I've only successfully done it once where I was a dick to everyone. At the end all but I think grunt survived 2 or something. Avoided any loyalty missions where I couldn't see value in it. Mission always comes first. It was horrible. It was the saddest. Party. Ever.

I think we're talking about different things. There's a difference between not being allowed to play video games and having a video game schedule with max one hour a day vs an actual addiction, being unable to stop. In this thread we're referring to the people who treat it as a hobby, but who are not allowed to have it as a hobby.

Oh I agree the system is fucked and cobra is equally bad. Being forced into this system though I would urge people to have enough in savings so that if they are dropped tomorrow from insurance they can at least rest easy knowing they have health care. Individually be ready for that rainy day. Societally yes let's rip down our healthcare system

You are with your kin here

I mean, young people can't afford their houses, at some point something's gotta give, or yeah they'll sell them to corporations.

That's okay, it's the purple on one the left. It's a big deal because as you can see, their network is more of a "hub and spoke" where all of the lines go through Manhattan. But if you want to go from Brooklyn to queens you have to take huge detours armnd roundabout ways to get there. This connects most of the lines at the edges

Kahn said looking back, she should have secured private health insurance as soon as she was laid off.

"I should have done COBRA, even though it was very expensive," Kahn said. "But yeah, hindsight is 20/20."

The near-$21,000 burden will probably lead to fewer vacations and a delay in having central air conditioning installed at her place, Kahn said.

She said she hopes others can learn from her misstep.

"It was my fault. I took the risk of not doing COBRA and that's forever on me," she said. "But if one person gets covered because they saw this story, then I would be happy about that.

Our system is fucked, that is for 100% sure. There should be no way that someone goes into medical debt because they were laid off, and we should fight to have a better system.

However, viewing the problem at the societal level and the individual level are different things. Societally we need to push for health care for all. Individually though - get COBRA, get on a spouse's plan, whatever you need to do. Don't risk it.

When was the last time anyone here ate at Arby's? It's one of those places for me at least that only gets brought up by my parents on where they want to go, and for me it's always ugh really?

It's so desperately needed. Anyone who has used the subway in NYC knows what a pain it is if you want to go between Brooklyn and queens. Best case you catch the G which if you're going to the outer side of the borough is still a long way out of your way. This would be a critical link between the very sprawling lines, and definitely will revitalize the outer edges

After a decade in the music industry as a relatively unknown indie artist, the Midwest princess catapulted to fame following her instantly iconic set at Coachella in April 2024. This was a huge adjustment for the singer-songwriter, who had never been in the spotlight before the festival, as well as having a hit single “Good Luck, Babe!” and viral TikToks and Instagram reels of her energetic live performances. But the combination of her hit song, her festival set, and her social-media presence, Roan has solidified a massive new fanbase.

In theory, this is the ideal for any pop singer, because having so many fans enables a pop star to leverage the profit that comes with visibility into gaining creative autonomy. But that also comes at a price, working in an industry that has a reputation for exploiting powerless artists by molding them into the most palatable and mainstream version of themselves for maximum earnings.

Roan’s 2024 trajectory is a great case study in how celebrity functions in America, particularly because she has had to take a crash course in balancing fame with privacy and personal space. In the beginning of 2024, Roan was able to go out in public in peace. But now, she encounters fans who demand her attention, her kindness, and her gratitude. Even more bafflingly, in September, Roan was widely criticized for not endorsing Vice-President Kamala Harris as a presidential candidate, and was forced to clarify that she is critical of all people in power. When she expressed her discomfort and set boundaries around her political and social lives, she received quite a bit of backlash online from critics who felt she should be grateful for her success.

It’s the ultimate trade-off: You’re allowed to make the art you want if you sacrifice your whole self to your audience. Back in 2016, an Amy Schumer fan who was insisting the comic take a photo with him, even as she asked him to stop, articulated this dynamic perfectly. The man told her: “No, it’s America and we paid for you.” If you’re famous, the public believes they get to do whatever they want with you, as some kind of a treat in exchange for the horrors.

For those who remember, it was bad enough where it was memeable. Once your factory got to a certain size we would have to turn autosaves down to every half an hour because they would take over 3 minutes - or longer. It became a mandatory break time, to stand up and get a drink.

Title question mostly. I've played with XTTS-v2 and it worked pretty well, but I'm wondering if folks are using anything else special. I'd like to train my own voice finetune which is what I did with XTTS-v2, and then use it with home assistant's voice feature. Welcome all opinions on it!

2 pizzas, a small order of breadsticks, and wanted to splurge and get cinnamon sticks.

Pizzas are a "Buy one get one deal!" at 13 bucks a pizza. Figured what the hell, I'll splurge on desert then with the deal. Get to checkout... hold on a minute.... 50 dollars for pizza?! Wait a minute 80 dollars after fees and taxes?!

Usually I only use Doordash for finding something, then I order direct from the store. I just saw the sweet "buy one get one" deal and thought eh, fine I'm here. Right, that's why I stopped using door dash. I'm not spending 80 dollars on freaking pizza. I'll just go pick it up and spend a quarter of that price.

At least I would have saved the $3 dollar delivery fee. Phew. Thanks DoorDash.

Hey all, I just wanted to give my personal view, now is the time to start talking about the Fediverse seriously with friends and family. I always have casually, but I'm starting serious talks with them now that the political climate has... shifted.

We are not the only ones who are concerned about our online privacy. Even people I thought didn't really care are suddenly concerned (or realizing) that their private chats and DMs may not be as private as they thought. I've found that many more people are interested than were even just a few months ago.

Fediverse is a bit harder, I've found it's easier to convince family with "It's a more private space for us to share vacation photos like we used to". Even my aging relatives know that facebook isn't safe to upload intimate family photos to, and they're looking for a solution. Friendica works well for this (and it's relatively easy to host a family instance).

Matrix has honestly been easier. It works similar to Discord so those users have been easier to transition, and you may be surprised how many of your friends are only in Discord to chat in your small servers anyway. If the majority of the conversation moves, they probably will to.

The biggest takeaway is, although we are techies, don't talk about the tech. It turns people away. Let it come up naturally. Describe the places as private, away from prying eyes. When asked "Well can I talk to other people?" Say yes, you'll show them how when it comes time for it. Don't bother with saying it's like email, or this, or that. To them, it's just an app. Send them to the registration page you want them to join at, and let it flow from there.

Good luck!

Another day in “oh my god @taylorswift is so effing classy” land. Opened a package today that had an @mtv case inside and thought “who worked at MTV?! Me? Charlie?…” What a delightful surprise! My 90’s girl heart is bursting. Thank you for sending me an MTVVMA, Taylor. What a joy you are. And thanks to the rest of my #antihero family @birbigs and @bejohnce 👯‍♂️👯‍♂️ #mtvvma #kimber

Hey folks, most of you probably have seen me around, I'm coming up on 2 years here and big believer like most of you. With the downfall of FB and Meta I have a lot of family who are genuinely interested in what I described as "A private way for us to share photos and updates, like we used to before FB... you know", and there was genuine positive feedback.

Next I set up friendica, and so far I'm happy, I think it'll do. Solid local sharing and privacy for sharing family specific things - but that's the easy part. The hard part is now how do I convince people to join - and harder - stay.

A lot of my tech friends want to do something similar, I think small family oriented instances like this could be great! However, how do I explain what else there is to offer to family who, let's all be real, do not want to hear an explanation of the fediverse? How can I word it in the most basic of ways without also sounding boring? That's the real kicker. Interested in opinions

Supreme Commander has been a very fun RTS - that barely worked on Windows.

FAF, or Forged Alliance Forever brought it back to life with my friends, where it rebuilt lobbies, shored up a lot of the patchy netcode, and made it fun - but as we know modding and linux gaming can be tedious.

Until I found this repo, where FAF now fully "supports" Linux! It was such a breeze, it found my Steam install, my copy of Forged Alliance, and it set everything else up. Huge kudos to the maintainer!
