In fact, Ubisoft recently blamed Star Wars' flagging brand reputation as one reason for the game's financial failure.

God be less self-aware Ubisoft. You built a boring game with the same mechanics as all of your other AC games, and you gave it the emotional maturity of a child's blanket. You aren't going to be raking in money if you're too afraid to have a story that has any emotional depth.

Here's a comparison between Outlaws (2024) and RDR 1 (2010) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg6mvYHjFvE&t=324s

Sorry I usually work directly with ffmpeg and that's how I had the hunch, those presets are h264 presets that go in. But does it matter, you said you were only curious, I think that's why, so now you know

That honestly sounds a lot nicer, I'll have to check it out, thanks!

Okay this is a 10 second clip of very cherry picker shots. The first one outside faces treasure Island, the sun is hitting it pretty hard, so I would say it's fairly early morning. Anyone who has ever been to Vegas will tell you that surprisingly, the floors are pretty empty in the morning. You know, because everyone is asleep.

This also could be a random Wednesday at 9am for all I know. Not exactly a reliable source here.

Not saying it's not down in numbers, but if you cherry pick your shots it will fit your narrative pretty easy

Chuck Mangione too

I disagree, it was fun, it was a good game - it just wasn't worth 60 dollars.

Outer worlds 1 was really fun, but I would put it in the $40 dollar tier of games. Above assassin's creed, but not rdr2 quality or anything. Unless 2 really outshines 1, I'll be waiting until it's down to that level

IIRC, presets are machine dependent, or at least they are optimized for the hardware. So if you have a weak machine, veryfast will use even worse encoding because you're simply saying "I just want it done fast", while on a more robust machine it may take more liberties. To match it completely I think you need to disregard the presets and set everything yourself, like CRF and everything.

Streisand Effect hits again it seems. Best way to minimize something would be to just simply not talk about it.

Honestly I loved Season 19, it absolutely raked modern culture, like the SoDoSoPa episodes, the town desperately trying to get a whole foods while ignoring everything wrong with it. Highly recommend it.

Keep on going, it's a good dream to have! (Get a good insurance policy too...)

And oh my god what a difference. Watched Fargo (1996) in 4k HDR on it and it blew me away how great it looked! I thought it would be a minor step up from an LED LCD but it was simply amazing.

Heads up too, if you're casually in the market, I worked at Best buy for years and can say Superbowl is the best time to buy. People think it's black Friday but that's just when they hock cheap crap. Superbowl is when they actually mark down the quality tvs. Saved 600 bucks or so!

Key note in here for Linux Satisfactory players is that the nvapi is exposed now for Satisfactory, hopefully that means less toying with CLI options

Hey everyone, for anyone with SNL collections do you have a place you know of where I could get SNL "Bumper" images?

Some images are the nice host images from TVDB, but a lot are missing. I can go through each episode and take a screencap, but that feels dirty and it'd be a ton of effort.

I'm hoping someone out there has or knows where to find a zip or something of all of them.

Thanks!

Dear Andre,

I'm Gianpiero Morbello, serving as the Head of IOT and Ecosystem at Haier Europe.

It's a pleasure to hear from you. We just received your email, and coincidentally, I was in the process of sending you a mail with a similar suggestion.

I want to emphasize Haier Europe's enthusiasm for supporting initiatives in the open world. Please note that our IOT vision revolves around a three-pillar strategy:

achieving 100% connectivity for our appliances,
opening our IOT infrastructure (we are aligned with Matter and extensively integrating third-party connections through APIs, and looking for any other opportunity it might be interesting),
and the third pillar involves enhancing consumer value through the integration of various appliances and services, as an example we are pretty active in the energy management opening our platform to solution which are coming from energy providers.

Our strategy's cornerstone is the IOT platform and the HON app, introduced on AWS in 2020 with a focus on Privacy and Security by Design principles. We're delighted that our HON connected appliances and solutions have been well-received so the number of connected active consumers is growing day after day, with high level of satisfaction proven by the high rates we receive in the App stores.

Prioritizing the efficiency of HON functions when making AWS calls has been crucial, particularly in light of the notable increase in active users mentioned above. This focus enables us to effectively control costs.

Recently, we've observed a substantial increase in AWS calls attributed to your plugin, prompting the communication you previously received as standard protocol for our company, but as mentioned earlier, we are committed to transparency and keenly interested in collaborating with you not only to optimize your plugin in alignment with our cost control objectives, but also to cooperate in better serving your community.

I propose scheduling a call involving our IOT Technology department to address the issue comprehensively and respond to any questions both parties may have.

Hope to hear back from you soon.

Best regards

Gianpiero Morbello
Head of Brand & IOT
Haier Europe

If only they would have reached out this way the first time instead of a cease and desist, their brand getting dragged through the mud could have been avoided.

I'm not really big on "let's make a movement", but this independent dev has been hit with a cease-and-desist from making a FOSS Home Assistant addon for their Haier air conditioners.

Haier claims that they are losing out on millions of dollars due to this plugin which... lets you control their air conditions from home assistant. They haven't bothered to explain how that's possibly worth millions of dollars - they're just claiming it.

So of course they hit the Streisand button and are demanding that he takes it down. He of course is complying... in a couple of days. Maybe you see where this is going.

It would be an absolute shame if any of you just happened to create a fork, or clone the code, or mirror it in your own instance. An absolute shame.

Just so everyone here knows which repositories NOT to clone or fork, here are the two links:

and please, don't repost this anywhere, or share it in other communities, or anything like that. It's a shame that so many people already know and are making clones. I'm just letting you know so you don't do anything like telling others who may make their own copies.

(sidenote: Haier owns GE Appliance, so for our American folks it may affect you folks too)

I can’t give more approval for this woman, she handled everything so well.

The backstory is that Cloudflare overhired and wanted to reduce headcount, rightsize, whatever terrible HR wording you choose. Instead of admitting that this was a layoff, which would grant her things like severance and unemployment - they tried to tell her that her performance was lacking.

And for most of us (myself included) we would angrily accept it and trash the company online. Not her, she goes directly against them. It of course doesn’t go anywhere because HR is a bunch of robots with no emotions that just parrot what papa company tells them to, but she still says what all of us wish we did.

(Warning, if you've ever been laid off this is a bit enraging and can bring up some feelings)

This leaked today from inside webmd, the most bullshit corpo HR video I think I've ever seen.

To break down the obvious ones:

  • Employees who are obviously either drinking wayyy too much company koolaid or who know that their jobs will end if they aren't in this video
  • An extremely out of touch CEO who wants things back the old way without giving any concrete data proving that it's better beyond conjecture
  • A company with "internet" in the name who literally doesn't understand the concept of the internet
  • Threatening and bullying language to force people back in office.
  • and just a nice touch, the office is of course not near mass transit or anything and requires driving in
  • Did anyone notice they were all on green screen, kinda proving that there was no need for them to be in person?

Sounds like it's going to build a framework for copyright holders and creators to sue people for sharing an AI generated likeness of someone's voice, body, whatever.

For those here who don't know, there's a conspiracy passed around from a small group of Taylor Swift's fans that she is secretly queer and is too afraid/ashamed/unable to say it. They believe that she talks secretly to them through her music trying to let them know that she is not hetero and needs anything from support to convincing others that she is.

I'll leave my small rant below about my swiftie feelings about it, but it just feels like a complete 180 from what the core ideals of LGBTQ+ are. To allow someone to feel comfortable with who they are, to not pressure anyone, to not pull anyone out of the closet, and to not be gossips.

All people close to Taylor that have spoken about the NYT piece have confirmed that everyone is shocked and angry about the piece, and of course they are. Even on the slight chance that she is queer (which open goes against what she herself has told everyone), how are you being an ally at all by dragging them out of the closet?

I think it was awful of @nytimes to publish. Triggering for me to read— not because the writer mentioned my nearly ending my life— but seeing a public person’s sexuality being discussed is upsetting.

I think the Gaylors should be ashamed of themselves. They are doing exactly what LGTBQ+ have fought against for decades now - people making assumptions about their own lives and sexuality - but they're masking it because it's Taylor.

I'm in the camp of anything that's not public is just that - not public. Even if it were true (and all signs point to it not being true), then it'd be disrespectful of us to talk about it unless she made it public. Think about it, you're going out of your way to talk about something that she explicitly has hidden from the rest of the world. That doesn't make you a better fan, it makes you a gossip and not an ally.

/rant.
