Fields played a good game, let's not get carried away with "great". He still got strip sacked to end the game...which nobody was surprised by.

It is in the Bears best interest for Fields to play well. Either we keep him, or trade him, but either way we want him to play better.

It is entirely plausible that the Bears miss out on the #1 and #2 pick, maybe even #3. It is a very real possibility that the Bears draft a Fields replacement later in the draft (McCarthy or another prospect) who backs up Fields next year. Someone the Bears can actually develop as a QB.

This notion that our options are Fields, Maye or Williams...that is a dream scenario. A more likely option is we have two first round picks we use on someone other than a top QB or MHJ, and we keep Fields.

None of these are bad options, but nothing is settled.

Of course it is...

1a) 1986, my Mom and I took a bus...a bus, 10+ hours from Springfield, IL to Dallas to watch the Bears play the Cowboys. We stayed at the same hotel as the Bears and my mom let me hang out in the lobby all day and night before the game looking for players for the autographs. I got nearly 3/4 of the team's autographs, including some coach's who signed. Some notable ones:

Walter Payton

Ditka

Singletary

Neal Anderson

Doug Flutie

Steve McMichael

Dan Hampton

and many, many more.

It was such a great experiences.

1b) I was so excited as an 9 year old, I think I started getting rude when asking for autographs. I made the mistake of going up to Mongo (McMichael) and just yelling "Autograph!" and sticking my pen and book at him. He looked right at me and said "No, you didn't ask nicely". Well, he was right, and I knew better. A couple hours later, he was coming back from where he went, and I asked, "May I please have your autograph?". He grunted, and signed my book... I said, "thank you" and walked away. This "Mongo" story has stuck with me for the next nearly 40 years.

1c) One of the autographs I got on this trip was from RB Coach Johnny Roland. He was an NFL player himself, but coached two of the Bears best RB of all time...Payton and Anderson. I wrote him a thank you letter when I got home (and a few other players I met) and he wrote back. He thanked me for being a fan, and sent a care package box filled with a felt pennant, a book, and a bunch of Bears swag. This was better than Christmas morning for me, it was a personalized care package from the man who coached God.

No matter how old I am, or how the team performs poorly on the field, I still remember the feeling of opening the care package from the team, I can look at all the autographs and remember how it felt to stand in the elevator with Singletary or watch Payton step out of a limo and walk up to me for an autograph.

And, I remember my mom taking me on a 10+ hour bus ride, each way, for this experience.

This is why I am a lifelong Bears fan.

The team has improved this year, which was always the goal. Talent is being developed, the defense is getting better, the OL and DL are gelling, and the DBs are starting to make plays. The big hitch seems to be the OC and the inconsistency on that side of the ball.

If they keep improving this year, keep fighting, I can see Flus keeping his job, and I wouldn't be mad about it, but a change in OC and DC.

IMO, Poles is doing what he said he would do. His picks are working, his acquisitions are producing, he is poised to be in the Pole position at the draft, and we have a shit ton of cap space for the FA market.

As an optimist, I would rather be the Bears now than the Vikings or the Packers...our needle is moving in the right direction.

"Can we shut up about Fields?"

Goes on to argue for Fields.

LOL

one one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand, four one thousand, five one-thousand..six one-thous.....sack.

Not a gunslinger.

[–] rugbysecondrow@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This will tell the story. No OL excuses, no RB excuses, no WR excuses, the Defense is playing better with top graded run stopping.

I really, really want Fields to succeed and learn how to win and close out games. He has to learn how to win the tough ones, no more drive killing sacks and fumbles.

This is also on Getsey and Flus. No more fucking excuses. They will have their entire team healthy, on D and O for the first time all year. What the fuck are they going to do with that?

[–] rugbysecondrow@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

WTF sort of thread is this?

[–] rugbysecondrow@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That is a dumb thing to say, it's what losers say. Of course they are A state, just not THE stat.

No matter, if Bagent, and UDFA, can go .500 and perform with these WR, OL and offense, then so should Field, in fact he should do better.

I like Fields and want him to step up. I would hate having to using a draft pick on another QB after spending three years wanting him to succeed. That said, it's on him to step up, lead the offense, protect the ball, and become a leader who can win.

[–] rugbysecondrow@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Disagree. Right now, an UDFA has a better record than him this year. He needs to change that narrative. Fields has no choice but to prove his can play, that he can win, and that he can overcome adversity. He is not good enough to wait-and-see...he has to prove it.

I disagree about Bagent as well. He is playing like a rookie, some good and some bad, but the Bears can continue to develop him as a great backup and maybe a starter a couple years down the road. They can have a QB that is a strength instead of a weakness with talent they developed...how great would that be?

I'm not sold that the Bears will draft a QB with their top pick. It is a stacked class and there are some great options in later in the first round of the draft too. They could trade out and stack the team with talent or they could take a MHJ with the high pick and a McCarthy or another QB with the lower pick. Trading Fields for a high pick might net a WR, QB, and OL or DL talent from this years #1 round alone.

Lots of great options

[–] rugbysecondrow@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

All of this. If Bagent, an UDFA, can win 2 games and be a .500 QB, then sure as shit Fields should perform much better than he has.

If he wants to be the man, then he has to step up and be the man.
