Pneumonic plague absolutely could spread quite well if it didn't kill you in two days like it does now. Thankfully it seems happy sticking to rodents. If we were really going to see an outbreak of a variant of it that spreads better, I'd expect it to come from Madagascar where plague is quite a problem. Over 200 died in an outbreak in 2017.

The one wrinkle in this story so far is that they ALSO raided a city council member (https://www.kansascity.com/news/state/kansas/article278220882.html). That council member also received the documents the newspaper were sent and she notified someone in the city executive. That was also a baseless warrant. And the county attorney who drafted the warrant and sent it to the incompetent judge is the brother of drunk Karen's restaurant landlord. There's more to be said about what is going on, but there's a whole lot of absolute incompetence in addition to malice.

When he was named Chief just two months ago, we got an outpouring of calls from his former co-workers making a wide array of allegations against him saying that he was about to be demoted at his previous job and that he retired to avoid demotion and punishment over sexual misconduct charges and other things.
We had half a dozen or more different anonymous sources calling in about that. Well, we never ran that because we never could get any of them to go on the record, and we never could get his personnel file. But the allegations—including the identities of who made the allegations—were on one of the computers that got seized. I may be paranoid that this has anything to do with it, but when people come and seize your computer, you tend to be a little paranoid.

Yeah the warrant references the affidavit that the police/AG provided for probable cause. I'd be very curious as to what that says.

I didn't read the affidavit, but folks are reporting that it doesn't justify the warrant for identity theft. I'm sure there are spurious allegations of a crime are in it.

An affidavit justifying the warrant is being withheld by County Attorney Joel Ensey, whose brother owns the hotel where Newell has her restaurant.

It gives him a motive, which generally some drunk Karen wouldn't provide. Police tend to ignore problems that might cause them to do actual work.
