It's okay, they don't care about you either...

So you agree that the goal is not to ease people into Fediverse, but to create a clone like experience.
No, not at all.
- I do not want to force people to use an specific client that shoves ads on their faces.
- I do not want to collect and track user data
- I do not want to have any saying with the moderation teams.
- I do not want to sell and monetize UGC and claim copyright on them.
- I do not want to ban communities because they might scare off advertisers.
You believe that Lemmy is better Reddit because of the things that it can do. I believe that Lemmy can be better than Reddit because of the things that it can not. Do you understand the difference?
I don't know if we are talking about the same thing when I say "content was not the problem".
What I mean is that people's objections to Reddit is not in the type of content that they could find there. Overall, people like the conversations they have there and they like the range of communities that were there. And none of the alternatives you mentioned stand on the same footing as Reddit, so there is no pointing in comparing them.
You are missing the point. The point is that there is nothing to ruin here.
The Fediverse is by and large composed of antsy, narcissistic tweenagers who never created anything and use this space as some form of support network. They think that just because they are outcasts they are part of some counterculture movement (like the punks or the OG hackers from the early internet), but they miss the very important part that these movements need to create something meaningful.
All they can do is ridicule (parts of) the status quo and resort to shoot down anything and anyone who is willing to take any risks to effect any type of change. And for all the talk about diversity and inclusivity, one can read any news headline or article here and know exactly what is going to be the reaction from the people
The only way to break away from this unbearably boring monoculture is by bringing more people. We need to get of our comfort zones, dealing with differences and learning that (some) conflict is important. The alternative is stagnation, and culture-wise stagnation is the same as death.
freedom, activism, technology, diversity
Boring, boring, boring, boring. This is all "meta-converaation", like this exact thread.
Where are the musicians, the woodworkers, the DIYers, the athletes, the architects, the photographers, the wannabe chefs, the contrarian educators who do not toe the line of Academia?
There is absolutely nothing "vile" about quote tweets. When used properly, it is used to enrich a discussion. It's not just because some idiot minority abuses a feature that it should be removed entirely. If well meaning people look at two different systems, and one of them is arbitrarily gutted of useful functionality, guess which one they will choose?
Well, this is certainly a lot less exciting than what I first thought.
it might be the Brazilian equivalent to MAGA that is currently mass-migrating to Bluesky.
actually, the opposite. The MAGA types are doing whatever they can to continue sucking on Elon's balls. It's journos and normies who are moving to Bluesky.
By "entering the Fediverse", do you mean that they created an account on mastodon.online?
You are choosing to ignore the rationale for the name:
- visually stimulating pictures
- lacking deeper meaning
- poor substitute or connection with the actual object/activity
"Best", "Awesome", "Aww" and any other suggestions that I've heard do not convey these ideas. And to me these ideas must be expressed. If you can come up with anything that can succinctly make these points across without resorting to porn/fetish analogies, then I will gladly consider them. But if you just want me to change it because it offends your sensibilities, then I am sorry but I will simply ignore you.
I don't mind the suspicion, but I think it is beyond silly.
I'm one self-funded developer who is stubborn enough to run this at a loss for almost 5 years now, and my greatest ambition here would be to maybe get 10-15k customers to pay me $30/year to be able to live with minimal comfort, provide for my family and hopefully contribute back to open source and the open web. Yet people want to paint me as some mastermind behind some huge corporation burning money around from investors and looking for a way to exploit users.
I'm honestly tired of this crab mentality. People think it's a sin to be upfront about their work and how much they value their time. It's also quite ironic that I can see the huge overlap: those who are always virtue signaling and complaining about bosses who don't pay enough to their employees are the same ones who refuse to patronize a small independent business, but go look at the phones in their hands and there is an 80% chance they will be holding a shiny new iPhone.
