We have blood vessels in front of our visual sensors. Squid and octopuses have better designed eyes.

I don't know how we compare in visual acuity to them, but they don't need to fake as much of their visual field as we do

I somewhat agree with the people who say humanity's biggest mistake was the invention of farming

We were all so healthy before that Egyptian technology made it to Europe

Ancient Greeks referred to the times before cities grew around farming areas as the golden age, when gods walked along men

Australia calls one of our salt water crays "Balmain bugs"

They're especially popular as a Christmas food

People haven't been farming before 10,000 years ago

With farming defined as deliberately selectively spreading seeds

50k years ago people weren't eating many plants at all due to the glaciers.

We didn't get engineered edible oils (like canola) until the 1930s. Things didn't get bad until engineered food

I'm pretty sure my groceries bill has gone down, but I can't tell for sure, since I have gone from shopping often, to shopping less than weekly. I have noticed that bulk meat from the butcher hasn't increased in price over the last few years, while everything else has.

Bees flying and tides are both well understood now. Tides have been for hundreds of years.

I don't know enough aerodynamics to describe how bumblebees fly

Tides are caused by the sun's and moon's gravity attracting the Earth's land and water.

If you had just said tides, I would have presumed you were being sarcastic, but bumblebee flight wasn't explained until fairly recently (within the last 25 years or so)

It's regular, it just isn't done very often. I'm probably older than you and this is the second time I have been reminded so

Were it to hit it would hit like a large nuke

[–] psud@aussie.zone 4 points 7 months ago

It's not big enough to fix anything. If it hits, it won't hit America or Europe

It's in the big nuke scale of energy, enough to do a lot of damage to a small area. Were it to hit a city, the city would need a lot of rebuilding. Were it to hit, few people would be in danger as we will have years of warning. The only people in the impact area would be "storm chasers" travelling to see the impact
