Population growth cycles are usually pretty stable under typical conditions. It's hard to overstate the number of cicadas emerging with these two broods aligning this year, this will be a population growth cycle on steroids for predators, which is why it's remarkable. Next year, with so many additional predators, they will negatively affect the populations of other prey due to increased predation, which will negatively affect predator populations the following year, etc. The point is the population disruptions in these ecological systems will be large

One of the theories as to why these periodical cicadas evolved these lengthy reproductive cycles is because they avoid elevating predator populations long-term.

I haven't read the paper, but I don't think it's that simple. Having an endless supply of food increases fecundity among predator populations, which means next year there may be a lot more of the animals that eat cicadas than there are this year, but the cicadas will be gone. The question is whether there will be enough food to sustain the increased population size next year, and the answer is probably going to be no.

While this is certainly a problem in Houston and is cited in this article as such, this flooding wasn't reall in Houston, but a decent way north of the city. Huntsville is deep in the Piney Woods and not very developed. Nearby Lake Conroe left its banks, as did all the many tributaries of the San Jacinto river, which all converge further south at Lake Houston, so it left its banks too.

There was a similar flood of the San Jacinto River in 1994, where over 15,000 homes were damaged. Since then, tens of thousands of homes have been built on land that was underwater in '94. They went underwater again in '17, and now again in '24. I don't know the history before the 90s, but I suspect there are many floods of the San Jacinto on record that didn't hit the news as hard because there weren't as many people affected.

The creeks, rivers, and lakes north of Houston have always been prone to flooding, because it rains a ton and the land is flat, so the water drains slowly.

Impervious cover was a big contributor to in-town flooding during Harvey in 2017, especially in West Houston, but just like 2017, flooding north of town is more attributable to the quantity of rain that fell

It should be noted this is not a Confederate monument, but a Union one.

We’ve seen more and more sovereign groups trying to recruit people who are involved (in disputes) with child protective services,” McAdam said. “They really try to use the idea of this is an illegitimate government, this is an illegitimate court system trying to take your kids away, and maybe we can help.”

On April 24, Grice became the fifth Misfit to be arrested. After two women went missing, law enforcement made four arrests in Oklahoma’s Cimarron and Texas counties: Cole Twombly, Tifany Adams, Tad Cullum and Cora Twombly. Adams was in a bitter custody dispute with the mother of her grandchildren and, according to court documents in the criminal case, the five were involved in a conspiracy to kidnap and kill. The plan was to ambush the children’s mother, Veronica Butler, and a court-approved supervisor when they came to pick up the children for a birthday party.

FML that's taking "grandparents' rights' to a different level. This woman must have been a monster.

Their car was found abandoned along a dirt lane in Texas County, Oklahoma. Smashed windows, a broken hammer, a purse with a pistol magazine and blood at the scene indicated something violent had taken place. The women were the object of an intense search for two weeks after their disappearance.

The bodies of Butler, 27, and Jilian Kelley, 39, the supervisor, were located following the initial arrests. They had been mothers and church members in their hometown of Hugoton. Their remains were found in a freshly dug hole covered by dirt and hay at a rural property rented by Cullum for grazing cattle. Tifany Adams, according to an affidavit filed by prosecutors, had confessed to participating in the murder of the women.

I doubt that, the article outlined how they've been paid millions over several years and are still representing him in other cases. Plaintiff's counsel is accusing them of using this as a tactic to disrupt/delay discovery, which would have Trump turn over damning evidence of employment discrimination against a pregnant woman in his campaign. The judge agreed with plaintiffs and has ordered Trump's counsel to continue representing him until they provide a good enough reason to need to back out.

They know you'll pay it because you're addicted to their flavored sugar water

They really aren't. There are tons of "mainstream" Republicans who wouldn't dream of voting for a Democrat. The only exception to that, for some of them, has been when Trump is on the ballot, but we've seen them fall in line time and again down ballot.
