Great advice, thank you! I'll give a first try to the first three through live disks :)

The "-ise" spelling is the one usually given as primary by the Cambridge dictionary, while the Oxford dictionary prefers "-ize". Oxford's reason for this is etymological. They give an interesting explanation under the entry -ize. I attach a snapshot below.

Edit: in summary, many of these verbs come from Greek forms corresponding to "-ize", and the change to "-ise" came later through French. The Oxford Dictionary people don't see why the French derivative should be preferred to the original form. As a consequence, they use "-ize" for verbs that have that etymology, but not for others: for instance the dictionary gives realize but also analyse, because the latter doesn't have the Greek "-ize" etymology.

Same here (Firefox on Linux). From what I saw, if you select (with ctrl+click) multiple languages in the "Languages" option in the settings, every time you post you'll have the option to select one of these languages in the "Language" drop-down menu of the post. But you have to choose one every time. It'd be nice if we could select one as default in the settings, so that we need to use that drop-down menu only when we're posting in one of the other languages.

Check out Gilman's Webster's Dictionary of English Usage on "have got". This book is great, it has a lot of insightful historical information, and the writer has an enjoyable witty style.

Thank you for the info. From what I understand, one only sees up/downvotes from one's own instance (lemmy.ca in my case). When I posted it I saw it going down to -3 in a couple of minutes, so I was wondering if my question was really dumb...

I got lots of great advice in this post!

I'll delete my edit :)

Thank you! I was hoping to hear about this kind of user experiences.

The fact they they listen to users' preference is a great plus for me.

Advice much appreciated!

I didn't know they made such claims. They're borderline dangerous claims...

Very informative, thanks! Also for the heads-up about install scripts and the cause.

Cheers! I've heard that one can install Debian and simply choose KDE there. I'm weighing my options... Undecided among Debian+KDE, Kubuntu, and KDE Neon. Although it also depends on how each deals with my machine. Will have to try some live disks...

Now I understand. Kubuntu instead makes modifications to the Ubuntu core. Although Neon must be somehow removing Gnome, I imagine.
