I think this is one of the reasons why people from English-speaking countries are less motivated to learn other languages; English is almost everywhere, to varying degrees.

It's sort of a gift and a curse. I enjoy learning languages, but there's no practical need for me to, so I'm bad at it ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Yep. I imagine Spanish is much more useful in Texas than in Alaska

There are language exchange sites and apps for that. Lots of people learn languages just as a fun hobby, and there are many resources out there for it

Fun fact: You can learn without school. There's sooo much information outside of school walls, and it's easier to access now than ever in the history of humanity.

It's useful for sending money internationally in situations that would be otherwise difficult

Of course, say no. However, I doubt it will be effective. That company has way too much momentum despite everyone disliking them.

Sometimes it's expensive or difficult to send money between two countries, depending on which countries they are. But if you know how to send crypto, it's the same process and price no matter where it's going.

Oh that's an interesting challenge.

I hear some LLMs now have some solutions for the classic "how many Rs in 'strawberry'" problem (related to the tokenization processes), but I have no idea how they might solve the phonetic thing. I'm sure some smart people will eventually find a way though

This may sound weird, but I think anecdotal evidence might be more informative than the productivity stats for now, until the industry settles on a new equilibrium.

Some engineers are more productive with AI, and some (maybe even most, still) are less productive. People are still putting in the effort to learn how to use it more effectively/productively (there is a learning curve), and some of the less productive are getting laid off.

It sucks, but that's just how it is now.

Also, AI tooling is still evolving very rapidly. A lot of information and stats are only valid for maybe a few months.

It is, intentionally. Some of the training data is synthetic

After MANY hours of single-player playthroughs, I decided to join one of the public multiplayer games. It was a bit crowded and overwhelming (but very cool โ€“ so much creative engineering in there ๐Ÿ™‚), and I had no idea how to jump in and contribute.

I almost never play any multiplayer games, so this might be a dumb question, but... How does this usually go?

Riley entered my life in 2008. I still remember that day. I found her on Craigslist, paid a $60 "rehoming fee", and she sat on my lap as I drove home with my new puppy. I was young and broke, living alone, and could barely afford my bills. It was an irresponsible decision to get a dog at that point in life, but I'm so glad that I was able to make it work.

She was a mix of two retrievers: Her mother was a chocolate lab and her father was a golden retriever. Somehow all of their puppies were black.

I had some experience with dogs before her, but I did not know about the amount of affection that retrievers are capable of. As I was getting to know her, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that she loved hugs so much, she even initiated them! Literally the sweetest dog I've ever met.

She was very smart. I was able to teach her most of her tricks in like ~10 mins each, while heating up frozen pizzas or whatever cheap garbage I ate back then.

She was the most consistent part of my bumpy path in life. She has been with me through tough breakups, my parents' deaths, career changes, and many other ups and downs that come with adulthood.

She's also the oldest retriever I've ever met. She would have been 17 years old next week.

We were together until her last breath. With my hand on her chest, I felt her final heartbeat.

And I will remember her until mine.

Riley was such a good girl.
