Bring back the DST

I had low expectations, yes, but somehow our PM managed to turn the recognition of Palestinian statehood into something that makes all sorts of demands on Palestinians while using the most passive of possible voices to describe Israel's campaign of war crimes and genocide:

"The ongoing failure by the Israeli government to prevent the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian disaster in Gaza"

I just cannot fathom how morally bankrupt someone has to be to make a statement so backhanded and cruel in the midst of so much injustice against the Palestinian people.

Thanks for responding and for taking a thoughtful approach with this. I would very much like the fediverse to eventually replace corporate social media, so it's good to see folks working on governance and policy with an eye to the future. And obviously I get that this can take time, especially when people are doing so on a volunteer basis.

I'd suggest, though, asking community members for suggestions & feedback early in the process, and also to seek out existing work on the topic of online community safety & governance, especially by women, BIPOC and queer folks, if you haven't already.

When I had looked through the mod log recently, there was also a case where a post from the Toronto Sun (to be clear, fuck the Toronto Sun) had been taken down with the reason being something like "American owned propaganda newspaper" and then reinstated. There at least need to be some clear guidelines around what can be posted, it can't just be completely made up on the fly.

Don't feel obliged to respond to this message, I just wanted to communicate these things to you. Thanks again

It's funny, the CBC have played nice with Conservatives for the last couple decades, seemingly to undercut the right-wing claims that they're biased and therefore should be defunded.

I don't know if ironic is the right word, but now it's Carney's Liberal government preparing to cut their budget by 15%, so I'm amazed this story got published!

We need to enshrine guaranteed funding for the CBC and end the partisan games that force them to have to triangulate their editorial position.

curious how quickly Carney would act if BRICS threatened to sanction him personally (and permanently)

from the article:

CBC News has examined both sets of records. At time of publication, the searchable website of the Israel Tax Authority details 2025 imports of Canadian "bullets" and other military hardware of a kind that Ottawa has said are not being, and cannot be, shipped to Israel.

The shipping data gives detailed tracking of military equipment that traces back to the door of one of Canada's biggest arms companies, as recently as last week.

Surprised this post isn't getting more traction. Absolutely shameful stuff from the Carney Liberals here.

Perhaps that's why the alarm is being raised ahead of the point where panic is the right response: it forces the government to clarify its intent now, so the department and its programs aren't thrown into complete chaos later

The 2025-26 document for the department, known as WAGE, was released in late June and outlines a $407-million budget this year, which drops to $284.7-million in 2026-27, and $76.3-million in 2027-28.

This is what is currently known, and is all we have to go on. Without any confirmation of plans to renew the funding, it is reasonable to worry that it will expire.

Call it non-renewal or call it a cut, either way, funding is set to be dramatically lower unless something changes. Departments need clarity if they hope to hire people or commit to providing services.

“Failure of the state to take appropriate action to protect the climate system from GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions including through fossil fuel production, fossil fuel consumption, the granting of fossil fuel exploration licenses, or the provision of fossil fuel subsidies may constitute an internationally wrongful act which is attributable to that state,” the court wrote in its unanimous decision.

If so, great! I remain skeptical given our PM's recent use of phrases like "Zionist Palestine", an inability to use the word 'genocide' to describe the ongoing genocide, and the lack of any meaningful action thus far.

Even the sanctions placed on two Israeli politicians in June don't have real teeth; a previous update (Feb 2025) to Canada's sanctions rules actually allows the foreign affairs minister to issue permits overriding restrictions. https://www.international.gc.ca/world-monde/international_relations-relations_internationales/sanctions/esv-vec.aspx?lang=eng

As I said in my other reply though, I genuinely hope you're right - but I don't see it as a foregone conclusion yet. Important to keep the pressure on our MPs.

I managed to get the office manager at my local constituency office on the phone on Friday, and was assured that I'll get a call back from my MP tomorrow. If I do, I'll ask directly what the plan is, and push for this to happen!

I genuinely hope you're right!

Under Mark Carney's Liberal government, the CMHC has quietly redefined 'housing affordability' to no longer mean 30% of income, but "perhaps 40-45% ... [and] over 50% of income by 2035".
