Back in 2009 I was working nightshift onboard a ship in Nigerian waters. I was stuck where I was, operating the machinery, so I radioed in if someone could please bring me a coffee, because I was sure I just saw a flying dog.

"Oh, those are fruit bats, you'll see more of them" they replied from inside, knowing exactly what I was talking about without needing more details.

And yes, I did see more of them over time; they liked hanging from the back deck work crane when it was not in use. Awesome creatures, and pretty large too.

Jokes aside, I love that movie. It just takes a lot of effort to actually learn wtf is happening.

I was thinking about setting up a game server for some friends and I, but I want it to be a game where you don't have to wait for others to be online to have fun.

I also want it to be a long-term thing, and where those who don't want to invest too much time can engage in casual play.

Bonus points if the game doesn't become cluttered with builds from players who drop out - I'd love to make it public (or close to it) and see what the world ends up looking like.

I was considering an open Minecraft server with some mods, but it's a bit too heavy once the amount of players becomes significant. Plus then I'd have to deal with griefers.

Oh, and of course, a game that does not break everything once it updates.

WIP preview of a 'heightmap decal' terrain modifier. This will give us the ability to create points of interest using hand-placed terrain detail in a desired location at a higher quality than the planet's base height texture. It's not 'painting' detail in (it's more like slapping on a sticker!) but it could be used to create some interesting locations - the example here shows off the dynamics of the modifier

Early water surface previews. We're currently putting in place the foundation for the ocean system, these shots are using placeholder gerstner waves which can be used to test the shading/geometry and integration with the other systems. Later on the waves will be replaced with a more realistic system.

...which allows for some nice plots when you're at semi-synchronous orbits. Can't wait to position site survey (spy) satellites this way:

Bright green is current orbit. Darker and more faded greens for subsequent orbits.
