Everything you do on lemmy is public forever. That's how activitypub works. Even if you delete everything no server has to respect that.

Anything you upload is public record forever until proven otherwise.

Votes are public though, pretending that they're not is just deceiving users.

Anyone who admins a federated instance, and any of their friends, knows vote counts.

But I also have an expectation (mainly from other forms of social media) that users’ votes should be kept private from other users

This is literally just reddit and hackernews, some of the worst and most astro-turfed socmed. Twitter post nazification too I guess.

I tried to use it to write software to rotate my screen in a way that would please me and if I wasn't an experienced sysadmin the code it produced would have destroyed the computer's battery in a year or so.

That was this year.

Everything it makes is bad, the prose is awful, the orthography bland, the code mediocre. Any factual query I have made has had at least one critical error a non expert would miss. They are machines for giving idiots false confidence, atrophying your own skills, and producing the sort of aggressively mediocre writing one finds on reddit.

I think it is fucking hilarious to be proud about making yourself dependent on an industry that literally 450 billion dollars in the hole and 2 companies. I am sure that'll work out well for you.

historical materialism

There's actually a really good method of analysis that is highly predictive about the actions of classes of people politically.

Personally I prefer clankerwankers but whatever works.

I also think slopmachine is a good slur for llms, given it highlights the gambling aspect and addictive potential.

But... you didn't take a look at the report and were talking about the most anodyne interpretation when they

a) explain why 18 b) explain the scope c) break down the kinds of attraction by age group d) break down the kinds of offences

Asking if you looked at the report and what you thought about one of the most shocking things is completely reasonable.

[–] naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Why did you have to be so rude and smug earlier? you hadn't read that part of the report so you didn't have a good reason to assume I was making shit up.

I copied the title of the authors in that piece, I don't want to inflame people, I wanted a discussion of something I found extraordinarily shocking.

Would have sexual contact with a child younger than 10 years if no one would find out (4.0%)

page 12, midwit.

It happened the other way because the vast amount (97%) of convicted offenders are men, and that expert consensus is men are vastly more likely to offend. People have limited time and money, so research is funded when it is able to clearly state its impact.

I wish we had infinite resources in the academy, but we do not.

There are many requirements in the police training manual. For instance anyone being searched at all is meant to be taken somewhere private and their dignity preserved. I assume most people have seen this not happen.

Same gender is one such requirement.

At least one Australian expert says between 3% as likely as men to 25% as likely as men to offend. See below.

You can just look stuff up you know.

Joe Sullivan has spent 26 years counselling child sex offenders in the United Kingdom and is visiting Australia to attend an international police conference at Bond University on the Gold Coast.

While experts agree the majority of paedophiles are men, Dr Sullivan says women are responsible for more offences than previously thought.

"What I can say for certain is that it's way more prevalent than people fully appreciate or understand," he told the ABC.

"There's some research to suggest it could be as high as 25 per cent.

"However, when you look at the representation within the criminal justice system it could be as low as 3 to 4 per cent of overall convictions."

I came across this after someone I know made some claims about pedophilia prevalence I found unbelievable. Leading me to the survey.

Surveys are hard, there's always some percentage of people that say strange things, and self reports could be over or underestimates of prevalence.

I think that the way the results bundle 19 year old who watch a porn video that had a 17 year old in it, and 50 year old that watched a porn video of a 5 year old together is needlessly inflammatory. While neither is good I think culturally we are generally vastly more worried about what leads to the second, or even what makes the 50 year old look for 17 year olds (i.e. cases where the 19 year old didn't grow out of it).

Still, some of these stats are extremely troubling to me, and I'm interested in what people make of it.

Umm what fuck? This is not going to go well.

Seems like it's been a nasty fight, that increase looks like it maybe covers CPI increases?

Anyone from sydney trains want to weigh in? Did they finally come to the table or is this exhaustion?

Ain't nobody out there who hates the country as much as tru blu Aussie farmers.

So the article only seems to raise these two cases, and it's not clear to me that either of these two people hurt any kids after appealing their check.

Is it just me or is this cooked? The right to appeal decisions seems fundamental to help reduce malfunctions or biases in a system. If the appeals process is too lax (doesn't seem like it?) then strength it sure but wtf is this move?

Fucking hell, 91 people in Australia deserve to be hung. Thieves on a monsterous scale.

Also lmao surgeons, always crying poor and saying they have no choice but to charge so much. Actually fuck yourself.

The design is based on the excellent Dactyl keyboard, generated with https://ryanis.cool/cosmos/ and it runs the excellent qmk firmware. It is handwired:

and I have also made a palm support using inkscape and openscad

All printed on a reprap prusa i3 derivative.

This helps me use my computer with less pain, so I want to call out all the wonderful projects and people who contribute to them which made it possible.

Total cost? $60 aud, amortised filament ~15 bucks worth maybe? and a lot of my time haha.

Yeah sure, lets allow companies to make highly attractive poison, advertise it using whatever tricks they can think up short of pornography, allow supermarkets to place this shit wherever they think people are most vulnerable and at eye level, allow sales and promotions promoting consumption.

Who could forsee that people would overindulge? What could be the solution? SIN TAXES

farque awffff. Can you imagine if we let companies poor waste into a river and taxed you if you swam in it? Fucking deranged proposal. This stupid political system that can't see a government as anything except a way of distributing financial penalties has absolutely cooked us.

Comrades, liberals, and the unaligned misers lend me your eyes.

Computer gaming is increasingly unaffordable, in Australia second hand previous gen GPUs are like a million billion dollars. Games increasingly look like dogshit due to stochastic rendering methods and reliance on advanced lighting methods that require rendering at high resolutions for good performance.

Games are also skyrocketing in price, along with dark patterns becoming ubiquitous. The age of making a good system for 1k aud once every 8 years or so is over. Consequently I am wondering about the economics of a seedbox + renting a high performance server and streaming video games to a cheap minipc that is connected to my TV.

Unfortunately in Australia compute is expensive as hell, and we are far away from places with cheap compute. To the point where light speed limitations means rtts of like 200-300 ms

I'm curious if anyone has experience in similar conditions, either combining a seedbox and high performance computer, or having both and spinning up the HPC when you want to waste some time.

How has it worked out? what genres work and what don't? has it been cost effective?

If this is stretching the limits of relating to piracy removal won't offend me. This seems the most relevant, but it is more into hardware and using pirated software (since shit is unaffordable) than piracy directly.
