I put a “compostable” plastic cup in my home composter once and watched it go round and round through the thing over and over again for years, still virginal in its plastic cup shape with everything else decaying around it into dirt

I have no way of knowing whether my composter was unable to achieve the right conditions or the claim was just a bunch of shit, but I know which is my feeling

I wonder if this is the very first time Kamala Harris has done any fundraising this election cycle, or if it’s just the world’s laziest attempt to put two “events” in confluence with each other in the headline so as to create a narrative and an excuse to write this week’s 500th story on this topic

Actually I admit I am not wondering that with any real uncertainty

I’m in the same boat. I started libertarian, switched to Green Party and never bothered to update it as they faded into irrelevance. I think I switched to Democratic just so I could vote for Bernie in the primary. But voting D in this election is obviously critical if we want to be able to have more than 1 party available as an option going forward, let alone 2 or 3 or more than that.

But I think it's odd that the attempted assassination of an American President in my lifetime... Just isn't surprising or interesting to me.

Not here either.

I have heard one person who wasn’t some friend/family I was specifically talking to about it, even mention it. And she clearly didn’t give a shit. She referenced it for like 5 seconds talking about something else and then never returned to the topic.

It’s fucking wild. I think everyone has just tuned out of the crazy shit politics news machine… which of course brings its own brand of danger. ☹️

Dude fuck him

He tried to kill America. If he gets back in office he plans to put the axe to any secret service personnel who don’t get on board with the murder. Just tell him no, go fuck yourself, insurrectionists don’t get protection and favors provided by the systems they’re insurrectioning. Figure out your own fucking security and count your blessings that we’re leaving you alone to do that much until the courts get their act together hopefully.

Hijacking the systems that are intended to be used by people who aren’t enemies to the country, and everyone going along with it like everything’s normal, is a key way that fascists slip into the systems which they then use to do terrible things.

There is a time and a place for democratic norms. He should have a trial, he should have lawyers, he shouldn’t just get assassinated and the country explode into civil war. But don’t give him fucking secret service protection. Now, or if he wins, or after he’s inaugurated.

He is the enemy to the system.

The system better wake the fuck up and start treating him that way. All this inviting the wolf in the house and showing him where he can sleep in the fucking guest room and where the coffee is is how we got Hitler.

As it does more often than not, “unity” means “I’m gonna keep doing the same crazy and explicitly hostile shit I’ve always been doing, and I want you to unify with the idea of me doing that and not give me any static about it”

I agree that in practice, it'll be Harris. I think then the sensible conversation is whether she'll have a better chance of winning than Biden will.

To me, the fact that she polls like 2 points ahead of him, while she is as she currently is an unknown quantity without all of the attacks against Biden that have been spun up (he invented inflation, he loves immigrants way too much, he killed Palestine, he betrayed Israel, etc etc pick your poison depending on the target audience involved), is a pretty good argument for rallying around Biden instead of switching to Harris and hoping she'll keep that 2 points. I think once the same machine that's been trying to burn Biden down gets spun up for real against her, she'll crumple up and get crushed worse than Biden currently is. Maybe I am wrong in that.

I can see an argument that Biden may continue to fuck up doing things like he did at the debate, and so we need to switch even if by the calculus right now it's a losing proposition, because of that risk. That doesn't seem crazy to me. But it's telling to me that people are saying "We need to switch to candidate X who can't be compared against Biden directly", instead of having the honest conversation about why it should be Harris.

I wish Jon Stewart would attend the convention as a candidate.

Three things can be true

And also a certain amount of understandable panic because he really did shit the bed pretty bad in the debate, which is then fed and amplified by dishonesty from the other three camps and precious little effort invested on the other side except for random do-gooders from time to time (and people like AOC who actually understand that she and her direct constituents will be in direct physical danger from a second Trump presidency and this isn't some fucking ratings game they're playing)

(in non-specific ways)

(raises hand)

Who are we replacing him with?

If that doesn't have an answer then I have one very specific way in which dropping him might make things worse

If the answer is "let the DNC figure it out, they've never steered us wrong before with a candidate" then I will have at least one follow up question
