Yeah, I get that. I was wondering if there was something specific to midwest.social's queue (e.g. high latency) that was causing issues. Sounds like maybe not; it's just a general issue of the volume of traffic in general bogging stuff down. (Right?)

Separating families at the border
You are aware that one of Biden's first acts was to start a task force to try to reunite the separated families, which was difficult because the fucking monsters that were his predecessors hadn't even bothered to keep detailed records of who the parents were for all these random uncared-for children that they still had in custody, sometimes too young to take care of themselves i.e. just bopping around with shit all over them or with life-threatening levels of neglect such that random visitors had to demand that they get taken in their unresponsive state to the hospital?
You can certainly cherry-pick some particular ways in which some particular aspect of life isn't much better under Biden than under Trump, although you'll have to carefully tiptoe around or mischaracterize some particular issues. Even the stuff you picked, though, winds up including some massive examples of why Biden is objectively better.
Yeah, pretty much. And like I say, I don't think they actually believe these things for the most part. I think there are some people on e.g. lemmy.ml who've been taken in by it, but I think most of the "all Biden all the time" accounts on .world who have no separate interest in any other activity other than not voting for Biden are exactly what they seem to be.
You broke the code, I think.
More than once, the anti-immigrant people have succeeded a little too much, and actually gotten all the immigrants away from a given community / given state, and it's created a big catastrophe for the economy and there was a ton of pushback until they made the immigration policy back less strict again (usually, by looking the other way on the hiring side exactly as you pointed out, but still being strict on the coming-into-the-country side, since trying to enforce that side is a lot less effective and basically just accomplishes short-term cruelty without doing much in the long term to stop people from coming in the country).
?
That is interesting, can you tell me more about this? Or is there a post or etc?
fall the fuck in line
I mean, I don't think anyone should "fall in line" behind any of the Democrats. That's part of the propaganda, is that they reframe something perfectly sensible (voting not to end democracy) as some emotionally resonant obedient thing that you have to fall in line behind the Democrats from now on, and vote for them no matter what, and in the meantime never criticize or disagree with them on anything, or even try to get concessions for your vote or do protests or anything else.
I mean, if that were the system, then they'd kind of have a point, even though in this election it would still be a good idea to fall the fuck in line behind the non fascist candidate. But I think at least at the rank and file level, the exact people who care enough to want to vote for Biden also care enough to, in a lot of cases, want to do direct protests and "uncommitted" votes and all that, because they care. It seems weird that the shills are so insistent that the system is either voting (and then agreeing with the Democrats on everything from then on), or doing the more-than-voting things that produce real change, which a lot of times a lot of the Democrat establishment itself kind of doesn't want people doing.
(I mean -- I'm aware that they don't actually believe these things, and are just sort of tossing them out from their scripts, and also don't care if people are poking holes in their logic, because the point is just to throw it all at the wall and hopefully some of sticks through sheer peer pressure. I think they don't really care if we believe them, individually, either. I imagine it's kind of like working in a call center; you just kind of type on a computer for a long time saying what you're supposed to say, and then going home)
(Hey... do you think that's why they're so passionate about how unpleasant it is to have to fall in line behind a political ideology and support it, and then that means you don't have your own voice and just "fall in line" etc etc, is because that's their personal experience of what it means when you are "on" one particular side?)
"I don't see the boat flying, see this is the whole problem with the Democrats is that when people tell them they're HURTING they just break out all these figures about altitude and tell you to stick your hand out the boat and see if you can touch the water, that's super condescending and not very productive and unresponsive to criticism, it's like a cult man, blue MAGA amirite, so anyway I'm definitely not voting for them NOW because now you hurt my feelings."
A little later:
"Okay SURE the boat is flying but as a strong leftist advocate I really think it's problematic how he's treated the underpaid people who build flying boat motors, and I think we need to focus more on what Biden should be doing better to convince me to vote for him against the hole-drilling-and-baby-punching club, because I think probably I'll sit this one out"
There's many a slip twixt "I am applying for a warrant" and any real consequences or end to the killing
I mean it's a good start and the fact that Israel and the US are freaking out about it so much is a pretty strong sign that it's on the right track, but it's still just a start so far
Stop, stop. It hurts, it's too real.
I mean it can be both (broadly speaking). NATO loves expanding and broadening the strength of its alliance, weakening a geopolitical enemy, opening up new markets for their shiny shiny weapons, and provoking a little low-level conflict to keep everyone alert and stay on top of new tactical developments now that the landscape of war is changing.
But also, holding Russia at bay is a necessary noble thing to do, and all these breakaway republics are acting out of pure self preservation necessity when they join an alliance that will bloody Russia's nose for them if they get messed with.
Yeah.
I think a lot of the ills of the modern internet can be traced back to the massive grey area between "I am such a dick that I am losing my account" and "I have something of value and my presence here is a good thing for the community at large."
In the BBS days, it used to be that there was an upload/download ratio. Like you can come on and join this little community, but also we're watching how much "load" you place on the system and we're going to ask that you limit your time, and provide something of value back to the other users too.
I do not think that exact system is suitable for the Fediverse era obviously, but there is something of that "This is my hardware, and I am providing it to you with the programmatically enforced understanding that you'll fulfill your end of the social contract, too" that has been lost. Too much of the time on the modern internet you're allowed to come on and just be a dickhead, on someone else's hardware they're providing for free, at people who actively wish you would stop, and it is your entitlement to do so as long as you're not being overtly racist or anything, and it's their job to block you or take countermeasures against you to keep it at a "manageable" level of maliciousness when combined with all the other dickheads who are doing the same thing.
