Oh, and, more specifically, right after the elections they'll 146% stop pretending, so people are also looking towards a major life quality drop on all fronts. =)
They're picking between pretense of legitimacy and no pretense of legitimacy, and they can afford it. It also delivers just the right amount of soul-crushing with virtually no risk of protest.
People do trust politicians. That's the problem.

There are keyboards with extra middle keys (Kinesis Advantage360 comes to mind), but if you're typing wrong, there's no way to soften that blow.
