Storage is for videos you upload. If you don't intend to upload video, you should just go for a PeerTube platform (instance/server) that federates with as many other as possible.
Who says you need to donate to the same channels every month? Spread it out, so that it's 10 different channels each month.

The official app is still very barebone. Have you tried installing PeerTube as a web app?
As to what I have done to debug the issue:
I've looked in every log I could fine in /var/log/, but they are pretty much just blank between the time it crashes and I restart it.
I've also tried disabling GPU transcoding.
