I recommend just using https://kiwix.org/en/

It's... suboptimal, but it's about the least finicky way to get a compressed local copy of Wikipedia with all the article photos (~100GB).

It's updated less frequently than the big dumps, but easier to use.

I'd be happy to write a bunch of sql for this type of thing and throw it on github if you have any more specific requests / if instance admins would find it helpful

50 years of C and still no sane standardized way of packaging dependencies 😫

Very cool!

Is this really a surprise? Do we expect the FBI to not use phones or computers?

When we use at&t's phone lines or Microsoft's operating system, we are implicitly relying on them to be secure. Same would go for using linux or a secure communication app running on top of it. I think most people would rather the FBI be spending time investigating crimes than developing software.

This is basically my view as a Fedora user.

I have some communities I am subscribed to that are automated, and consequently become very spammy in the home feed, but I still want to view and engage with their content. It would be nice if there was a "mute" feature distinct from blocking that would allow hiding posts in a a community from the home feed but still allowing subscribing, since blocking unsubscribes you.

I've never used Matrix, and I'm overwhelmed at all the options and feature criteria on the project website.

I'd prefer a native app over electron/similar, but ideally would like something that works on most desktop platforms (windows, mac, linux), although I'm open to it if it is truly superior.
