If you want, you could use GMail filters to delete those emails automatically. Here's how:

  1. click the engine button (settings), then "see all settings", then "filters and blocked addresses".
  2. click "create a new filter". Add "top of Google search" to the field "has the words", leave other fields blank.
  3. click "create filter", then check the "delete it" box, then "create filter" again.
  4. repeat steps 2-3 for other shit that SEO spam is likely to mention.

Important: never use as a filter anything that legitimate users might reasonably say. Only things that you're fairly certain to come from a spammer.

EDIT: I repeated two steps without noticing it. My bad.

Got someone in my family with diabetes type I, and we've been hearing about the "magical" solution coming "soon" since she was diagnosed with it, in her childhood, around 30 years ago.

As such I'll keep what I see as a healthy amount of scepticism towards this piece of news.

I don't understand, why are you calling the other poster racist? I'm so confused... everything that he said is true. Source: I'm a gratch.

Apparently my method is a mix of those listed in the text.

I'm in a similar situation as OP, some of my income is irregular. So my monthly budget isn't directly based on the last month income, I use the average of the last six months, relying on a checking account for that. (I keep it with enough money to last me one or two months.)

Then I split that budget into four categories:

  • savings - I aim for 25%. Into the saving account it goes.
  • monthly fixed expenses - periodic, somewhat predictable, monthly. For example bills, cornmeal and rice, cat food, etc.
  • variable expenses - they're necessities like the above, but there's some wiggling room. Like, if necessary I don't mind eating eggs four lunches a week and walking instead of taking a bus, but I'd rather not to. Usually split into four weeks, so I expend it gradually.
  • "fluff"*¹ - avoidable expenses that I still want for some reason like "it improves my mood". Things for my hobbies, going to a restaurant, buying nicer clothes or hardware, etc. Unused fluff gets transferred to my savings account in the following month.

Then here's how I address some complexities:

  • periodic expenses for things that I buy every few months (e.g. gas canisters) - I include a fraction of them into the monthly fixed expenses, and only remove the money from the checking account when buying it
  • erratic but large expenses (e.g. house repairs) - I usually "borrow" this money from the savings, then "repay" it in the following months, as a fixed expense*².
  • high income multiple months in a row - I cap the budget and send the overflow to the savings.
  • low income multiple months in a row - cut down fluff, then reduce variable expenses, then reduce monthly fixed expenses, then reduce savings, in this order.
  • really low income multiple months in a row - if really necessary I borrow from the savings, keeping in mind that I'll need to repay myself.

Notes:

  1. The actual name that I give to this category is "imposto das lombrigas", or roughly "roundworm tax". That's from from my family jokingly referring to cravings as "to have roundworms for [something].
  2. Some people might use a credit card instead for that, to build credit; that also works, but it depends a lot on the government that you pay taxes to. I do have a credit card but I tend to avoid it, as often there are discounts for paying things in cash.

My favourite insult in English - "you muppet".

...I'm going to agree with @db2 here - sailing the seven seas will be likely the way to expose the new generations to this old content. I remember Muppet Babies from my childhood (albeit poorly, I was too young), and it's fun for young kids. If nobody is streaming it nobody is losing value if you copy it, right?

[–] lvxferre@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

It sounds more like a piece of protest than an actual license. Any arsehole could interpret the situation as "since this is software and not a human being, it isn't ackshuyally learning anything. So our usage of your content doesn't violate your license lol lmao".

I think that people are correctly angry at big tech calling dibs on whatever it wants, but misblaming it on AI. There are worse cases out there; have you heard about targeted advertisement, for example?

[–] lvxferre@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Chomsky's concept of UG (universal grammar) is able to handle this. Since there would be a chunk of language that is innate (universal), that feral child would share it. So, as a conclusion from that, even if the feral child isn't expressing it through vocalisation, since they lack an "application" of the UG (like Nahuatl, Mandarin, Quechua, English, Kikongo etc.), they'd still have some rather simple internal monologue.

...that said I think that Chomsky's UG is full of shit. I do agree with him that the faculty of language might have developed first to structure thought; but my reasoning resembles a bit more yours, the role of language would be to formalise thought. Thinking without language is possible in the same way as moving across a village without roads - it's doable but clunky, and you'll likely take far more effort than with proper roads/ a language.

Not to challenge Chomsky on his own turf

Don't worry. Everyone and their dog challenges him. Including himself, he's often contradicting his own earlier statements.

Not even a body pillow, Anon is a master tulpamancer and made a tulpa of some MLP character.

[–] lvxferre@lemmy.ml 29 points 2 years ago (6 children)

Chomsky would say that the original purpose of language is to structure thought, with communication being solely secondary. (Or something like this, I don't recall it word-by-word.)

If that's correct, then internal monologues are simply a result of your brain processing your thoughts.

The article mentions what the author sees as two trends behind retrocomputing (reusing the old and escaping the modern world), but I'd argue that the second one should be further split, since there are two modernities that people are running away from:

  • unnecessary complexity. Since the old stuff performs the same role as the new one, minus unnecessary delays or elements introducing cognitive load, might as well use the old stuff.
  • lack of control. I'm not talking about an AI takeover or shit like this. Simpler stuff: big tech has become considerably better, over time, in bossing you around so you do its bidding, even against your best interests.

For further info, the link mentions this article. If I got it correctly:

Higher pressure compresses the orbitals of the sodium atoms, making them more cluttered together. As a result, the outer electrons - that "should" be in the 3s orbital, surrounding the nucleus like a bubble - are repelled to more energetic orbitals, like 3p and 3d. Those orbitals have "lobes" reaching far from the nucleus, so further away from the other electrons.

But since the sodium atoms are not isolated, and all those sodium atoms are doing this at the same time, the 3p and 3d orbitals from multiple atoms overlap. Orbitals overlapping form a chemical bond. And, since it's damn hard to remove electrons from those bonds to send them elsewhere, electrical conductivity goes down. Sodium becomes first a semiconductor, then an isolating material.

So it's a lot like your usual macromolecules (like, silicon dioxide or diamond), except that those bonds are shared by multiple atoms, not just two. And I don't think that it's a coincidence that all three are transparent, given that those electrons "stuck" in specific molecular orbitals suck major balls at absorbing photons and releasing them back.

Personal predictions:

  • high-pressure sodium should be bloody hard, and not malleable at all. Kind of funny given that normal pressure sodium is really soft.
  • other s-block metals will behave similarly under high pressure. If exceptions exist, they'll be the largest ones (in this order: radium, francium, barium, caesium).
  • aluminium and gallium might behave similarly, but you'll need a lot more pressure to pull it out. (Note: this is completely unrelated to a certain oxygen/nitrogen/aluminium ceramic that was developed recently.)
  • d-block metals like iron are probably unaffected.

Apparently the admins aren't too happy with the new form of protest that Reddit moderators found, since NSFW subs don't run ads. Brought to Reddit users by the zombie admin account u/ModCodeOfConduct!

The admins also removed the entire mod team of r/MildlyInteresting (original link) and replaced it with either employees or sycophants, while giving all mods a 7d suspension ban.

Reddit: "subs belong to the community!"

Also Reddit: "screw the community, this is MY PRECIOUS!"

I'm willing to bet that r/ModCoord will be eventually banned. And the ban message will say something cryptic, vague, and meaningless.

Hi guys, starting today I'm implementing 37 new rules for this community. All members are expected to read and memorise all of them before posting or commenting, under the risk of permaban.

Okay, I'm joking with the above.

Serious now: I'm creating this metathread so you guys can give me some feedback on the community. Specially criticism; feel free to voice issues, concerns, and what have you.

EDIT, Jun/26: given the general lack of criticism here I'm unpinning the thread. Still, if you got issues with the community, please do voice them out here.

This paper provides some actual data on the bouba-kiki effect, where certain words are non-arbitrarily associated with certain meanings, by analysing the frequency of sounds used in words conveying a specific meaning (as "bone", "stone", etc.). It takes cognates and areal effects into account.

This book lists cross-linguistic tendencies in phonetic inventories. It's a bit old, but a good read for anyone who:

  • is into Phonetics and Phonology;
  • wants to analyse the underlying pressures behind phonetic inventories (e.g. "why does language A have the sound X, instead of Y?")
  • is building one's one constructed language, under a naturalistic approach

If the archive link doesn't open for you, here's the original link. A few highlights:

  • Since RR is not monetised, it'll likely survive the APIcalypse
  • The dev is still concerned about Reddit's tragetory
  • The dev is in contact with Lemmy devs.
  • "My long-term vision for RedReader is to restructure the app to more easily support other sites, including Lemmy, and perhaps others such as Tild.es and Hacker News."

I'm linking the series because I don't see manga communities talking about it. It follows the otome game isekai villainess premise, but it gives the villainess a chance to fight back, 24h before her demise, as the "memories of someone I didn't know" flow into her.

Don't expect this to be high literature, but hey, it's fun.

Excerpt:

In our last email to them, we stated that we wanted $4.5 million in exchange for the deletion of the data and our silence. As we also stated, if we had to make this public, then we now demand that they also withdraw their API pricing changes along with our money or we will leak it.

We expect to leak the data.

Apparently r/pics is protesting through malicious compliance; the subreddit is open again, but all content being shown is uninteresting pictures of... who's John ~~Galt~~ Oliver?

And the moderators decided to actually consult their community, on what they should do. You could vote on two options:

  • Upvote this comment if you want /r/Pics to feature only images of John Oliver looking sexy. As of time of archiving this option was at +51k points.
  • Upvote this comment if you want to return to normal operation. As of time of archiving this option was -8k points.

Interesting detail on how the r/pics moderators worded it:

Anyway, we – the so-called "landed gentry" – definitely want to comply with the wishes of the "royal court,"

I personally didn't realise that there is such an implication on what Pigboy said - that if he's calling the mods "landed gentry", he sees himself as a king.

EDIT: as other users are pointing out, other subs are doing the same sort of malicious compliance, so I'll share them here:

  • r/gifs (archive link, (original link). As of time of archiving it has +21k points for John Oliver gifs only, and -5k points for returning to normal
  • r/art (original link) - as of now (7:20, São Paulo time), votes are still not visible. Same as above, John Oliver vs. normal operations.
  • r/aww (archive link, original link) - +56k "to only feature John Oliver, Chiijohn, and their lookalikes bein adorable", -2.5k to return to normal.
  • r/showerthoughts (archive link, original link). Voting on the days that the subreddit should be open or closed.

In the light of Unabomber's passing away in prison, people are reviewing how he was captured, and how linguistics played a role on this.

Linguistic analysis of his Manifesto yielded the following pieces of info:

  • "rearing children" - typical for a Northern USA dialect
  • "clew", "wilfully" - back then, used mostly around Chicago; so the author likely spent his formative years around the place
  • "broad", "chick" - narrowing down the expected age range to middle-aged
  • "anomic", "chimerical" - highly educated speaker

The article also mentions a few other cases of linguistic analysis being used to identify other people, such as JK Rowling as the Cuckoo's Nest author.

Let's backtrack to 2020. Back then there was some protest in USA about cop violence and racism, it had repercussions in Reddit (with a bunch of subs closing down in protest, as usual). kn0thing used this opportunity to resign from the board of directors of Reddit, claiming that he wanted to be replaced with a black candidate.

Perhaps kn0thing knew what would happen? Not the exact events, mind you; but he knew Reddit Inc. and spez well enough to know that they'd eventually fuck it up, lose a lot of money, and lose face. So he jumped off ship earlier, pockets and reputation unharmed.

What do you think about this?

(u/kn0thing, RL name Alexis Ohanian, is the co-founder of Reddit, alongside Steve "piece of shit" Huffman and Aaron Swartz.)

When you get to be compared with someone who dropped the ball, and people still say "he looks like a genius, in comparison with you!", you know that you fucked up.

Don't be fooled with all this focus on spez though. Even if he's gone, the company as a whole needs to wither before the IPO.
