Being angry at the users, or powerusers, who left reddit is like being angry at ants for fleeing their home after a flood for higher ground and starting over somewhere else. It ain't the ants that decided to drool all over its hill/colony before even IPO'ing all the work they had done.

Amazing to me that it was Spez that screwed reddit over BEFORE selling reddit out. Usually people like Spez are at least smart enough to keep things running smoothly up and until they sell it off - but I am sure the potential investors will appreciate the depreciated value of reddit. 😂

If I could award some sort of idiot currency or lemmy currency to mock Spez I would. The guy really takes the cake on being inept at what would have kept Reddit highly valued imo in the short, mid and long term.

Yep - best option is to defederate them well before they gain traction & start creating problem by not contributing back to the protocol in a way that benefits everyone.

I think after the community got burned by Microsoft & then google we’re finally learning.

Tbh it’s far more likely they’ll implement extensions to activitypub that are specific only to threads & make activitypub users want them - but can’t have them - this peeling off users for them vs a slower moving, free & collaborative platform.

Imho to avoid a Google loves XMPP (they pretty well killed it) situation ActivityPub servers need to largely block Threads completely or face being extinguished in much the same way as XMPP. Don’t give them a foothold & don’t trust that a private entity like Meta will play nice, they aren’t joining to be a peer, they’re joining to either take it over or kill the competition.

Why not just ask them to remove the self identification and leave it at that? You don't have to say you or they got anything wrong - just that you do not want that on your file. I feel like that would be the better option and avoid any possibility of termination later for them claiming you lied to them.

And that is dumb. Companies with any sense will veer to debian and distros that are going to be open with their own contributions because gasp - you can write code, put it out under gpl v2 or a permissive license and make money on the support contracts like they were doing.

Tbh - some of us, like me, did leave our most valuable comments to the tech community behind. Whether it helps reddit or not I still posted things to help others. I did delete much of anything outside of very tech related subreddits though. Also I promoted some software I wrote when applicable so it would only cut off my own nose to try and spite Spez too, so no I would rather not do that.

Reddit will die a slow death I am sure, but the heart of reddit is certainly gone.

From the best I can tell mine has been staying deleted, although some keywords I thought I completely removed seemed to have still had some hits later, but not many. Hopefully most of what is left is just gibberish at this point. I meant to fully delete those, but oh well. I think it might make it easier for them to do roll backs when things are tagged with redact in the message sadly. I do just want to be done with it though.

Took waaaay too long to scroll down to this comment but bingo. It got over ran by qanon, alt right & extreme conservatives - many of whom got banned from YouTube or yea want fame & money.

I just hope the alt right doesn’t latch on - but w/ this being the Fediverse we can at least use reason & spin them off in their own little corner.. for better or worse. (Better for us & worse for them)

I don’t know what else is the answer though - they either drag us down w/ them or we rise above it & leave them to wallow in their messed up world views.

If this turns into an Odysee then this will be a very sad place built w/ good intentions.

My question is.. has the reason RHEL and centos been as popular as it has been simply because of a 10 yr enterprise support term this entire time or something else?

I get Ubuntu Server only lasts for 5yr - unless you go spend for the extended support.. but was 5yr LTS from ubuntu server really that make it or break it for people setting up solutions for companies? I feel like the upgrade path is also pretty painless on a 4-5yr cycle as well most of the time. I get it would be even nicer to set something and forget it for a decade - but reality is the 10yr term could be anywhere along the line, not like a new release was happening every year or 2 I doubt. I mean LTS does have that sorta overlap every couple of years so I guess maybe so did centos and RHEL, but still.

Tools are often built of specific and older versions still as well and with containerization being what it is now.. I feel like Redhats big advantage of 10yr support periods is kind of diminished from what it was in the 90's or early 2000's.

Just goes to show everyone that wealth =/= intelligence and while I feel sorry for the rest of the people and their families in there - I do think that if anyone should have died in that mess it was the CEO himself & certainly not some random tourist that he couldn't have cared less about besides their money and those tourist dollars.

If lol? I think it is obvious that they will already - at least for anything tech or dev related for sure and that will be enough to sustain it because obviously those same people have other interests as well, and will attract gamers and the rest. It may take time for the Vinn diagrams to all align with each other but the rest will come eventually.

How reddit itself formed.. tech the tech centric audience from Digg and slowly everyone came along with them - even if they didn't like the transition initially. Reddit has literally committed suicide whether spez realizes it or not. I think obviously people like Mark Zuckerberg and the guy ahead of twitter - pre-elon saw it coming, why bluesky exists and why Facebook wants to join as well before they become irrelevant.

Spez is a fool who can't see past his own nose and just wants to cash out by IPO'ing - but the thing is he's both too late and mishandled the IPO already. He will get the absolute smallest pay day of all the platforms that have gone public in any way imho. I am sure he'll make out fine still, but it will be a small pittance that it could have been had he shown an ounce of respect for the reddit community.
