I make $40k in a major american city

I hope you have healthcare, because that sounds terrifying.

I still remember the good old IBM Thinkpads, most of them were indestructible tanks. But with Lenovo, those times are long over. My last machine was a TP L390 Yoga. It overheated frequently, the cooling system was inadequate for the 4.6GHz Intel CPU, one day the logo sticker came off because the glue turned into sticky liquid, the passive Micro-Ethernet dongle cost 50€ and the cable turned into glue after a few months...god, what a shit machine this was.

I was able to work with it for a while by limiting and undervolting the CPU, but one day a Windows update came out that disabled the functionality and it worked like crap on Linux for a long time due to bad drivers.

I switched to GPD now. Never going back, although I miss the Trackpoint a little bit.

I have a GPD Win Max 2 2024 and it's such an amazing device. Everything works ootb on Fedora, except the FP reader (but that's already being worked on). Raytracing on a 10" device, what a time to be alive.

It's also very easy to disassemble, clean and repair.
So GPD definitely wins in my book.

So you expect human art to be perfect? That's not how the world works. I think it's a good composition, even though a setting like this wouldn't make perfect sense in the real world.

This is better and more real than AI art, for sure.

It’s getting words correct, but those might just be titles added post-hoc.

That's what ultimately threw me off, including some weird perspective issues here and there - those could just be typical signs of a beginner artist, but something feels fishy about his artwork - so I've decided to hide this post and to not post any more works from this artist here.

[–] lichtmetzger@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

To me, the image looked manually overpainted on first glance, which is an art style that can be often found in hidden object picture games - so it wasn't obvious AI art to me, or else I wouldn't have posted it. The most obvious sign of AI art is weird anatomy (broken hands etc.) and that is used as a horror element in his works, so it can't be used to spot the images as AI easily - that might be a deliberate choice, after all.

However, I looked closer at the header image for a while. And yeah, the background buildings look a bit too warped to be entirely made by hand.

Why would a building have a curve here? This seems to be some weird projection issue someone wouldn't just add here.

I think I'll avoid posting works from this artist in the future. I still don't believe he's making these images entirely with AI and he probably uses a mixture of overpainting, generating AI assets and bashing them together, but a lot of the images seem somewhat fishy and the weird texts/logos on a lot of artworks ("Restaurant" here and "Happy Holidays" on one of the buildings in the artwork above) don't fill me with confidence either.

I've hidden the post so it can't be reached as easily anymore and added a disclaimer to the title.
Thanks for being sceptical, posting non-AI art is a rule here after all. :)

[–] lichtmetzger@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Usually this gets posted in December but it’s getting a little dense so I thought I’d send it out into the world now. Just a collection of individual pieces of work from across the year! If you want to see more of my art you can follow me here: https://www.instagram.com/danielmcgarryart/

Personal artwork. I used this piece to try and learn and explore new techniques to optimize my workflow. The inspiration for the piece is also very scattered among a lot of different universes and stories. I’ve also been a part of a art-group who helped with very valuable feedback with this piece and I thank you!
