but I rarely see much talk about openSUSE.

Probably because most of the openSUSE users talk in German elsewhere.

With some phones you need to go through extra steps to be able to do OEM unlocking. Looks like it is the case here, see the steps in the FAQ linked here : https://en.miui.com/unlock/download_en.html

This appears to have solved the same problem for others :

While toolbox and distrobox seem very similar, distrobox comes with a slight warning :

I don’t consider MAC OSX as part of BSD, just like Android isn’t part of Linux Desktop, but only uses the Linux kernel. OSX took parts of BSD and shielded it behind a proprietary wall, because the BSD license offer no protection from that. So they become separate projects the moment they enter the Apple domain.

Check : What happened to the open source Apple Darwin OS then ?

tl;dr : Darwin OS is kind of obsoleted.

Up to Darwin 8.0.1, released in April 2005, Apple released a binary installer (as an ISO image) after each major Mac OS X release that allowed one to install Darwin on PowerPC and Intel x86 systems as a standalone operating system.[12] Minor updates were released as packages that were installed separately. Darwin is now only available as source code. As of January 2023, Apple no longer mentions Darwin by name on its Open Source website and only publishes an incomplete collection of open-source projects relating to macOS and iOS.

Kernel is 6.1.0-21-amd64 but I don’t know has the kernel been updated recently.

zgrep linux-image /var/log/dpkg.log* can tell you more.

I believe NetGuard will act as a VPN.

Yes, correct.

This will prevent you from using an actual VPN.

It is indeed a drawback I forgot about (but a VPN connection can also be made on a local router at home).

If you cannot use another OS yet, install F-Droid and then install NetGuard. In NetGuard enable blocking of system apps in the settings and continue and block all apps. Then allow only the apps you need.

That howto uses sudo modprobe wl whereas you use sudo modprobe -v b43 Is it possible that the wl kernel module gets loaded ? You should be able to check with lsmod after a reboot.

In such cases on Debian I've installed firmware-b43-installer (or firmware-b43legacy-installer which I think depends on the type of WiFi card) package and then run the firmware down-loader from the package once.

After that it would just work after a reboot. Does Fedora have a similar package ?

The major takeaways of this work are:

(1) For specific workloads, clusters of repurposed phones are cheaper and more carbon efficient than traditional servers.

(2) More broadly, scavenging unwanted equipment shows excellent potential for building economic and carbon-efficient systems, especially when renewable energy is plentiful.

(3) Sustainability has operational and manufacturing facets; manufacturing dominates as operating trends towards zero with cleaner energy mixes.

(4) Accurate LCA information is essential for carbon-based analyses; it would be beneficial if more ICT manufacturers published this information, including cloud providers who build custom systems. Our work highlights the need for more holistic analyses of the environmental impact of computing. With the substantial carbon cost of manufacturing and the difficulties of responsible recycling, the energy efficiency of a device may be the least significant component of its environmental and human impact.

Three artists from art collective Creative Debuts have defended a mural it painted on a house in Ilford, England, paying tribute to Palestinian journalists amid calls for its removal from UK Lawyers for Israel.

Alia Shaikh, who owns and lives in the house, said she personally commissioned the piece because she otherwise “felt powerless” about the ongoing atrocities. She said "They’re heroes. Without them, we’d have no idea what’s happening.”

Thanks to Erin Jordan for her informative and alarming April 28 article, “Google data center would be among Cedar Rapids’ largest water and energy user.“ So now Google wants to take our water?

I believe like many Iowans, that clean water is a human right. It must be available and affordable for all. And it ought to be used wisely, sustainably and for the benefit of all.

Google is one of the largest and most profitable multinational corporations in the world. It wants to draw perhaps up to a million gallons of water daily from our city water supply to cool their behemoth complex. I say perhaps because we don’t really know because they haven’t made public their plans. And they want to do this during a historic drought. A drought over three and a half years old which the Department of Natural Resources has labeled the longest in Iowa since the 1950s.

As Jordan points out, how will this affect residential water rates? How will it deplete our city and statewide water resources? For me, it also comes down to whose interest is being served here. Are our increasingly precious water resources being used for the public good or for private, corporate gain? This sure seems reckless and irresponsible to me. Will their Silicon Valley dreams evaporate into Death Valley days for all of us soon? Surely, our decision-makers can do better than this!

Very interesting and understandable explanations of low level architecture and filesystems, namespaces, userspace, kernel functions, drivers etc.

Highly recommend!
