Your web link (404) appears to be missing something. This is correct : https://getaurora.dev/

Perhaps you are thinking in best and better and what most people want. For me there is something like curiosity (Not very uncommon in the open source world) and learning new things.Besides that I am not very amused about Intel and their Spectre and Meltdown failures which is still not a closed book with new attacks being reported in the news. For hobby and work, computer security and privacy is something that I cannot neglect.

Thank you all.

At the ever increasing cost of the pi and how limiting it is, the n100 is a no brainer.

Depends on the use case I guess.I prefer to have an ARM based SBC to play with (rather than an Intel based box) to test different Linux distributions and BSD without GUI.

At this point, I’m not sure why someone would buy a Pi. I used my Pi 3 for years and got it super cheap on release.

You mean why anyone would buy a new Pi that is not a Pi3 ? Pi4 can boot from USB meaning that the usage of a SD card can be omitted completely. Not sure a Pi3 can do that or do that easily ?

Before you throw the pi5 out, buy a USB Ethernet adapter ? I have a few of them and they work fine for me with Linux and BSD.

  • Most folks will probably freak out when they see a terminal window ("DOS box") on a computer.
  • Most folks in my country have no idea that there is something else than WhatsApp as alternative to SMS.
  • Whenever I've tried explaining to people that stuff on their website violates privacy or when I try to explain why they are having email delivery problems almost always results in permanent silence or disbelief.

Technology appears to be a scare factor for a lot of people. But in this case the librarian maybe thought that Ethernet was only for their qualified IT department to use.

That, and maybe one or two fart jokes too many.

What? Fart jokes? Blocked! /j

Hmm... Today I learned that lemmy.world is the biggest Lemmy instance.

Only the front-end of feddit.de has serious problems, right ? Why would the maintainers not run another front-end (e.g. Elk) on the same server and redirect their broken front-end link to that as work-around for web users ?

Mowing lawns is killing pollinators.

People put so much energy into growing grass. Seeding, liming, fertilising, watering… so they can create endless, mindless busywork and destroy biodiversity.

Lawns were originally a status symbol. A “hey lol look at me I have enough land I don’t have to grow food.” Shameful that it took off as a defacto standard.

Good point. As a matter of fact a friend of mine living in another country in Europe told me that in his country it is forbidden for people to have a garden and put only stones and tiles (sp?) in it so it cannot breath. In my country there has been a trend for many years that people turned from a garden with plants and flowers to a garden with just stones and zero green. This week I saw in an on-line newspaper that lots of people in my country are now getting rid of the stones and buying plants. The "help-the-bees" cry of help which some people have been talking about seems to finally take off with larger numbers! Fingers crossed.

NEW: WhatsApp will soon make it possible to chat with people who use other messaging apps. It's revealed some more details on how that will work.

— Apps will need to sign an agreement with Meta, then connect to its servers.

— Meta wants people to use the Signal Protocol, but also says other encryption protocols can be used if they can meet WhatsApp's standards

— WhatsApp has been testing with Matrix in recent months, although nothing is agreed yet. Swiss app Threema says it won't become interoperable

The UK government are set on eroding any right to protest that is left. Please do anything you can. I don't care what banner you do it under, just please do something.

Michel Forst, the UN Special Rapporteur on Environmental Defenders, has scalded the government for their draconian crackdown on any people trying to sound the alarm but as we've seen recently, there is no justice system and countries cannot and will not hold each-other to account. You can read his report here.

Damn Small Linux 2024 (www.damnsmalllinux.org)

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ndlug.org/post/655313

The New DSL 2024 has been reborn as a compact Linux distribution tailored for low-spec x86 computers. It packs a lot of applications into a small package. All the applications are chosen for their functionality, small size, and low dependencies. DSL 2024 also has many text-based applications that make it handy to use in a term window or TTY.

The new goal of DSL is to pack as much usable desktop distribution into an image small enough to fit on a single CD, or a hard limit of 700MB. This project is meant to service older computers and have them continue to be useful far into the future. Such a notion sits well with my values. I think of this project as my way of keeping otherwise usable hardware out of landfills.

As with most things in the GNU/Linux community, this project continues to stand on the shoulders of giants. I am just one guy without a CS degree, so for now, this project is based on antiX 23 i386. AntiX is a fantastic distribution that I think shares much of the same spirit as the original DSL project. AntiX shares pedigree with MEPIS and also leans heavily on the geniuses at Debian. So, this project stands on the shoulders of giants. In other words, DSL 2024 is a humble little project!

Some people were asking for a private SMS app, and I thought about Silence, which development had stopped, but there appears to be something new : https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.afkanerd.deku/

I've looked at suggestions on StackExchange and made some changes to files in /etc but after each login or reboot it is up to 100 % again in pavucontrol. On this computer I hardly ever use the speakers, and I want the microphone muted, always, so I guess I could even block list a few kernel modules for sound (which ones ?). But why can a desktop user not easily turn volume to zero, forever ?

Edit : Thanks all. It was not StackExchange but on AskUbuntu from where I tried some suggestions. I also tried muting audio in Pavucontrol but that didn't help between logouts and logins. Now I have set the default audio device in Pavucontrol to Dummy, and that works. I can still play sound from a video in VLC, but the microphone keeps muted.
