They probably donated themselves but that wasn't enough PR for them. Gotta milk it.

Aug 21 (Reuters) - Wildfires on Hawaii's Maui have killed at least 114 people, forced tens of thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate the island and devastated the historic resort city of Lahaina. It's the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century.

Cool thing is pirates get to play the game earlier than the paypigs who did not buy the overpriced Deluxe edition or whatever it is called. (This is not a call to publishers to Denuvo their games.)

I feel like calling situations like this a "crisis" makes it sound like a natural disaster rather than an intentionally manufactured one.

The first Dark Souls game felt like torture. I remember running around in the underground poison swamp to farm upgrade material then running up to Andre to upgrade my weapon and it felt like such a chore. In Anor Londo, after fighting a gargoyle, the way forward was so unintuitive I gave up because the game was not for me. I ended up watching some YouTuber play the game after that.

The point is that if you sanction a country like DPRK with a weaker industrial and technological base, you can cripple them very severely. China is a much more advanced country. Them being sanctioned in the realm of 5G chips led to an initial slump but eventually they ended up becoming capable of manufacturing their own chips which in the end is a huge win for China.

Moonofalabama had a short post about this earlier in case you wanna read it: https://www.moonofalabama.org/2023/08/huawei-chips-demonstrate-the-perils-of-technology-protectionism-.html

UHRP is a CIA cutout

Uyghur Human Rights Project was founded in 2004 by the Uyghur American Association, and have eight full-time staff.[1] The project was founded with a grant from the National Endowment for Democracy, and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax-exempt organization in 2016.[3][4]

I get your point now. But the rooting out of corruption part is a big if in realising the democratic potential of elections. When there are Western interests in play as is the case with many African countries, the corruption is crucial in keeping the subject open to western exploitation. As such any effort that would seem to curb corruption also opposes western interest and faces opposition because of that.

This is why there is a contagion of anti-French coups in Africa currently. It is not because they don't know how to do democracy better but because it's extremely difficult to overturn the ruling class through legal and electoral means.

If elections were rigged, that would mean that there was no democracy in place to begin with. How is changing to any other system a loss in democracy even though there was none to begin with?

I downloaded the season packs from RARBG (by BTN, ION10 and DEMAND) but I don't like the quality of the torrents.

Earlier seasons do not have subtitles. Some of the later ones that do have them are downloaded from addic7ed rather than ripped from source. Moreover the volume level is really low across the board.

Anyone knows any better quality torrents on public trackers? Direct download will do too.

Thanks.

There is this YouTube channel called The Michael Parenti Library which has a bunch of Parenti lecture videos. I ripped the audio from them, did some very minor processing and uploaded them as a podcast. So if you want you can listen them through whatever podcast app you use (if you use one).

There is this TikTok clip suggesting that the currently ongoing TikTok Senate hearings are a result of media campaign paid for by Meta because they could not compete.

If this is true, why cannot they compete with TikTok? I know there are YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Why don't they do as well?

I was thinking of getting an Odroid N2+ to use as a Jellyfin/Plex server. What other things can it be used for?

I know there is RetroPie but I have no interest in that. Any other suggestions?

I found this twitter thread about the aftermath of the "controlled combustion" as it was called: https://nitter.1d4.us/FalconryFinance/status/1624051231554510848#m

Things look really bad. The evacuees won't be able to return their homes ever again and the burning is causing an ecocide in the vicinity.

There is very little coverage for all this though. I read that reporters were being arrested but wasn't able to look further into it.

Edit: balloons are getting orders of magnitude richer coverage than an incident that has essentially left 5000 people without homes and their pets dead along with most of the life in the area.

I didn't know that the American Christian movie industry had the resources, time or know-how to make a knockoff of Finding Nemo. I guess it makes sense considering it's the religion of choice of the settler population there and is used as a cudgel to enforce "American values" or whatever.

The Family Code went through a rigorously democratic process. From the first process of consultation, where more than half of the Family Code was modified, to the second part where through the mass participation of Cuban people over 40% was modified, the collective process of the enactment of legislation becomes clear.

The Family Code was also written in understandable language so that the Cuban people could easily comprehend the legalities involved. The code is intended not just for use in courts of law, but also as an educational document for families to use as a guideline to understand their rights and responsibilities.

The final step of the process, the national referendum, will serve to legitimize the Family Code. It doesn’t impose any kind of model on Cuban families; rather, it protects all people and families, and future families, as required under the Cuban constitution.
