Looks great I'll be checking different color scales, I'm still figuring out the plotting library though.

[–] kernelle@0d.gs 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Ah yeah ofcourse I was experimenting with comparing it with the lightspeed itself, then inverting it with -1 so its coloured correctly. My mistake not changing the label enough.

Then the scaling goes up to 10

That is actually the real scale, in Europe we get theoretical speeds of 2-3ms according to the speed of light. Real RTT's in Amsterdam for example are around 20ms, so you get values >10. The further you go from the EU, the closer to ideal times.

It's interesting to see the places where connectivity is much better or worse than the surrounding areas.

Nice catch! I centered there to fit the entire world on the map. Here's centered on London:

Azimuthal Equidistant Projection shows the equal distances, probably my favorite

Mercator Projection is good too

Hard to get the scaling right but I messed around a bit, here's RTT / (2 * Distance / c )

Scaling on Europe is fun too

Great idea! I'll be writing some code later to calculate distances first.

Thanks! The coolest part IMO is when you overlay it with the subnautical fiber optic network. The north of spain, the US east coast, South-Africa, Brazil, etc all show almost exactly where these cables connect the continents.

You should see the size of his...

Socks, is what I always say!

Oh ofcourse, but there being no price difference is definitely new for dell. I needed a Windows laptop at the time, but bought the Ubuntu one because it was literally €200 cheaper.

Edit: This is CRAZY, just checked Dell website. Buying one with Ubuntu instead of W11 Home will cost you €250 MORE. That's insane.

[–] kernelle@0d.gs 6 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Huh that might be new, when I bought my XPS 13 from them in 2019 it was a 200 euro difference when buying with Windows vs Ubuntu

[–] kernelle@0d.gs 1 points 3 months ago

I don't think they ever patched the IP leaking, Skype was used to dox millions.

Tesla doesn't open-source their plans so you can build your own, better version of the cybertruck.

The price of petrol will fall again from midnight tonight (Friday 17 November). From then those filling up their tanks with petrol 95 (E10) will pay no more than 1.715 euro/litre. This is the lowest maximum price E10 petrol since the end of December 2022 and is a fall of 4.5 cent on the current maximum price.

The new beer museum in the old Brussels stock exchange building is a tremendous success. In only a couple of months, the beer experience centre has already attracted 20,000 visitors. “This is many more than we had expected” explains Belgian Brewers’ director Krishan Maudgal during the presentation of a new promotional campaign for Belgian beer.

Public transport users in and around Brussels will now also be able to buy their Brupass and Brupass XL tickets – which give access to the networks of SNCB, STIB, De Lijn and TEC – digitally across all four of the companies' apps.

As passengers can buy a Brupass (XL) ticket for one or ten trips directly in the app of the public transport operator of their choice, they no longer need a MOBIB card for these tickets, just an account in the SNCB, STIB, De Lijn or TEC app. People must first download the latest version of the app and then create an account.

The ICC Cricket World Cup in India is reaching its climax. Unfortunately the Belgian national team didn’t qualify this time round, but if Hassan Shah, the president of Cricket Flanders, is to be believed the team stands a good chance of qualifying for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, when cricket returns to this event. Belgium finished second, behind England, in the European Champions League. If we win in Los Angeles cricket will truly be coming home as the sport was, of course, invented in West Flanders in Belgium.

It was during the Middle Ages that cricket was first invented in West Flanders. Hassan Shah likes to describe the sport played at this time as “primitive cricket” and it is indeed Pieter Breughel, one of the great Flemish primitive artists, who provides conclusive proof of the sport’s Flemish roots in the background of his painting “The Harvesters”.

I'm running this Lemmy instance because I believe in the importance of having a decentralised and open social media platform. The ability to spin up your own server and contribute to a space where people can come together to discuss and share ideas without being bound to one platform or userbase is what has proven to be the most robust and progressive way of creating a digital agora.

What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a federated alternative to Reddit, which means that it is made up of a network of independent servers that communicate with each other. This makes Lemmy more resistant to censorship, improves transparency and gives users more control over their data. Here you can find a list of all active and federated instances sorted by popularity.

The Web was designed from the ground up to be decentralised and open to all. These values are what made the internet and are being spat on by companies trying to seize control over the content and its users.

Lemmy is the internet’s response to an ever increasing centralisation of social media. Where every regular social media is owned by a single entity, Lemmy has no owner and consists of hundreds of intertwined instances.

This concept also connects Lemmy with many other forms of social media which are collectively referred to as the Fediverse.

Federated?

~ Anyone can host a server
~ Servers host instances
~ Instances host Communities
~ Communities host wonderful people
~ Instances can communicate freely between each other
This is federation

What makes Lemmy and any federated platform so interesting is the ActivityPub protocol. This allows Lemmy, which is a content aggregator social media, to communicate (or Federate) with other types of social media, such as Mastodon (a twitter microblog style) and PeerTube (video hosting). Meaning any instance of the Fediverse can independently read each others content, without the necessity of having to use different apps and/or accounts.

To get started, you can start browsing communities! Find any Lemmy instance to create an account and Subscribe to Communities you find interesting or even create your own and start sharing content.

Why 0d.gs?

Short URL's have always intrigued me, and have owned quite a few. With ICANN explicitly prohibiting them, it's tough to find TLD's not only allowing but also having them available. 0D also has a significant meaning within my main interest field.

I hope you enjoy your time on ø Lemmy Zero D ø
