Arrived in WA and seemingly brought shitty weather with me but because of the rain, it's quite warm! I dusted off my Switch after goodness knows how long and played The Gardens Between for most of the flight. Really cute local game though a bit overdone on the 80s nostalgia/Japan theming with the cutscenes... still very beautifully designed, ingenious puzzles - nothing too hard but they scratch your brain in just the right way that makes you feel like an ingenious kid again. So in that regard, top marks for really giving puzzles a feeling and a narrative.

Well, time to get myself out of this shed of a terminal and enjoy a nice meal and a good night's sleep. 😴

Somehow, I completely neglected to put "wallet" on my packing list and had pretty much left the building to get into the uber before I remembered in a panic at the last possible second. Thank fuck, given that I'm renting a car in WA in about a week and would need my physical driver's licence most likely. Although, worst case I could've gotten my friend (who has keys to my place) to express post it over but anyway, crisis averted.

I'm sure I'll remember some other thing I wanted to take over and forgot about, but it's too late now! 😎 I have the most important things and clothes to suit every damn weather condition so I'm set. Off to try and be a human again...

Argh yes the periodic changeover of providers... That's top of the list of Admin Shit I'll Sort Out Once I'm Several Thousand Kilometres Away From It All. I actually like my current provider and will be using basically no energy until 6 Sep but I know I won't have the headspace to think about it when I get back, and why pay more per day for just connection rates?

Frogurts are banned in this weather. Cursed or otherwise... (that's good)

We could all do with a defrost after recent conditions. Even for work it'll be nice to get a bit of warmth!! Enjoy!

Sad: Realised this library book I've been procrastinating on reading can't be renewed any more and is due while I'm away. Have to drive quite a ways away to return it.

Glad: realised I could borrow the same title from a different library system on the way back, and it's closer to home (they were all on loan last month).

Sad: couldn't find my library card. Shit shit shit.

Glad: library staff extremely helpful in getting me a barcode to use. Book borrowed and ready to read in detail on my holiday!

Sad: well now it's late and traffic and gah. Will I run out of time to do everything tonight?

Glad: oh wait I booked my flight for tomorrow late arvo, not midday like my brain thought. So I have plenty of time. Yey.

Edit: extra glad: tax refund came in, yeehaw. I can safely enjoy my trip without worrying too much

This is a really good point re: the passport. For example, getting the highest level of security on myID (which you might want to lock out scammers etc) requires an Australian passport.

I haven't started packing yet and I'm heading into the office for lunch as my colleagues are taking me out to celebrate finishing my degree. I guess I'd better start now πŸ₯± 😴 😳 πŸƒπŸ½β€β™€οΈ

It makes sense to put apartments there but boy the traffic is going to be even more heinous. I guess they were planning on shutting the place down anyway, it's so dingy and unrenovated, and all the other shops in that block have progressively closed down (first the vegetarian restaurant, then Laurent, and I suppose the $2 shop is next)

I hope this doesn't mean the excellent (in terms of range) Kew Woolies doesn't start enshittifying because they have less competition. And that toscanos can up their game.

Lots of running (driving) around for gifts and things today. Used to be so much more excited about hunting down truly local gifts from Melbourne but idk these days I haven't got the energy.

Leo's in Kew is apparently closing down - after the Heidelberg one was shuttered - so that's a big loss of random imported fancy groceries. Gonna grab my Monsieur Truffe for the last time in a long time I guess...

sigh I came home for a pit stop that lasted 45 minutes but it's time to get my arse in motion again before traffic becomes deathly

screams into void

hopes that void cat might appear in response

E: I am finally done with my last day of work before my trip!! Tomorrow I start driving around to get gift items and stuff, then start packing. Starting to feel real! πŸ₯³

Do you think that might be heritage lichen?

What the absolute fuck? 20 months? I genuinely do believe rehabilitation can be possible for some pedophiles as opposed to just punishment, but this guy has zero remorse and for the degree of his offending...

I remember how big this was for a while - only for this bit of news to be buried with a short article. Surely the scale of infestation (resulting in the change in approach) is going to have significant impacts to pollinator-dependent agriculture?

I'm wary of how diluted "affordable housing" means. Bypassing Council, VCAT and third party appeals are very tasty prizes for developers and I'm sure plenty would manipulate the definition of "affordable housing" to get a ticket to far less planning oversight, especially with the low bar of entry at 50 million. More housing is desperately needed, and NIMBY pushback has definitely been an issue, but I really hope the homes will actually be affordable, and that the Vic government planners will enforce good quality design, not boundary to boundary grossness with no setbacks or green space.

Many people predicted this would happen...

What do you think? As a migrant myself I have to confess I'm not that on board with expecting aged parents to be part of the package when migrating over, even my own aunts and uncles who are currently going through the process via their own children.

However, it is cruel of the Australian government to keep providing "hope" and taking people's application fees when they have understandably little intention of increasing the aged migrant intake. I think they should cut the crap and stop offering these visas if reducing aged migrant intake is their intention. Just keep on the long term visit visas for parents, whack on a mandatory private health insurance clause if needed.

Cooking on gas is the one environmentally damaging thing I don't want to give up, I'll admit...
