Can somebody ELI5 this to a normal tech person who is aware of the RISC5, but has no idea why everyone is so excited about this?

  • Why is this exciting?
  • Is there a future where this replaces x86 CPUs in the desktop / laptop?
  • Will emulation or translation layers allow x86 applications to run on RISC CPUs?
[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

For sure I wouldn't be racing with that FOV. Yeah, I bought a Rift CV1 "just to try" it. I haven't raced on a flat screen since.

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Haha, The Angst is perfect for those corners!

Thanks for the advice, yeah it's my plan to make more videos and see where I end up. You're right I'm recoding in replay mode as I race in VR.

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago

That's great work!

I'd love to get a custom livery one day, but I've not really got my brand identity worked out yet. I'm currently running black and very pink, but idk if I'll stay with that!

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If you fancy dipping your toes back in to it, feel free to join us. We have an iRacing league for beginners, and a fortnightly hotlap challenge in Assetto Corsa.

If you want a copy of AC, let me know. I have a spare key going nowhere fast!

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago (4 children)

Did my first sanctioned iRacing event last night. Will be putting up a video on !simracing@lemmy.ml tonight hopefully.

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

Yup, the Formula 1 community isn't in there for example.

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

First I've heard of the static shock thing. I'd bet that was really annoying!

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 19 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

The EU specifically disallowed that in their terms.

  • Harmonised fast charging technology will help prevent that different producers unjustifiably limit the charging speed and will help to ensure that charging speed is the same when using any compatible charger for a device.

Happy to keep that in mind. Feel free to put forward suggestions!

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah, I suggested an open wheeler as I've done nowt but GT3 for the last few months too. If other people suggest them and it gets voted for, then I'll race it for sure!

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Bite their arm off for these two at £60m. Harry clearly does not fit our style of play, and Scott just isn't good enough to rely on week in, week out.

This would be the best deadwood sale we've done in a long time.

c/formula1's Rules

In addition to Lemmy's Code of Conduct, the following rules are in place for c/formula1:

1. Keep it civil

Posts & Comments Reported as: Keep it civil

  • Keep it civil. We strive to foster a community in which discussions are lively and possibly even heated - especially during contentious races and events - but personal attacks, generalisations, posting of personal information, and similar toxicity will not be tolerated.

  • Etiquette is important to keep c/formula1 an open and welcoming community for everyone. TL;DR is "Be nice".

  • Don't be abusive. Fair criticism of teams, drivers, broadcasters, and other personalities is allowed, but this is not a place for blind hatred.

    • Prolonged or excessive attacks on either fellow sub users or F1 personalities will not be tolerated, and nor will wishing harm to drivers.
    • This includes hoping that drivers will suffer incidents. Motorsport is dangerous, and some things shouldn't be wished on your worst enemy.

2. Gatekeeping/provocation

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Gatekeeping/provocation

  • c/formula1 is an open and welcoming community for everyone.

    • Any threads initiated as a way to gatekeep the subreddit or vent against other members will be removed and can result in disciplinary action.
    • Responding to content that violates these rules by retaliating in kind also violates these rules and will subject members to disciplinary action.

  • Do not comment with the sole purpose of baiting, trolling or inciting reactions from other users. This will lead to disciplinary action.

    • If there is a problem with another member or with one of the mods, please leave it to private messages.
    • If you believe you are being targeted by a specific user for harassment it may be advisable to submit a report to the admins as well. If you are unsure about whether this is appropriate, or how to do this, please contact us via direct message and the mods will be happy to help you.

  • Calls to brigade, troll, vandalise, or rig other communities, open platforms, or contests are strictly forbidden and likely to result in an automatic ban.

    • Sharing malicious or satirical edits on open platforms like Wikipedia and Google Maps is not permitted. It is irrelevant if the person submitting a post/comment about an edit is the same person responsible for the edit.
    • Encouraging others to rig F1's Driver of the Day vote (or similar contests) is also considered both trolling and a form of internet vandalism, and will be met with disciplinary action.

3. Fan warring/attacking fan groups is not okay

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Fan warring/attacking fan groups is not okay

  • In a sport as intense as Formula 1, fans are always welcome to express excitement, but the way a small minority of fans choose to communicate their passion for teams and drivers is problematic.
  • Comments attacking fanbases are not okay on this community, and will be met with disciplinary action. Don't pejoratively generalise or stereotype groups of fans. Tribalistic behaviour produces nothing but toxic comment threads and bad faith interactions between users.
  • Equally, don't be a toxic fan warrior. Fair criticism of teams and drivers is permitted at c/formula1. If another user goes off the rails into destructive criticism or targets your fan group, use the report button to alert the moderators and enjoy as the aggressor is banned instead of engaging.
  • Disagreements are okay and it is expected that not everyone will like every team or driver, but there are acceptable ways to express this.
  • Unacceptable comments would be along the lines of:
    "The Tifosi are..."
    "Hamilton fans are such..."
    "Typical of Dutch fans to..."
    "These Drive To Survive fans..."

4. No racism, sexism, homophobia, stereotyping, prejudice, etc

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Racism, sexism, homophobia, stereotyping, prejudice, etc

  • Bigoted and hateful conduct is not tolerated at c/formula1. This community is welcoming to everyone, no matter their age, gender, gender identity, sexual preferences, race, or any other defining characteristic.

    • Racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, ableist, and/or other discriminatory language and sentiment belongs in the dustbin and will result in strong disciplinary action, up to and including a permanent, non-appealable ban for a first offence.
    • Users who exhibit a bigoted mindset elsewhere on Lemmy and stir up trouble at this sub will receive a permanent ban to safeguard the members of this community - we will not tolerate hateful trolls.

  • This also includes use of dogwhistling terminology (tropes and clichés associated with bigotry such as "All Lives Matter"), jokes which include such sentiment, defence or justification of bigotry, attacks on anti-bigotry initiatives, and any other form of commentary aligned with these behaviours.

    • For instance, do not disrespect women/minorities/others by suggesting that Formula 1 has solved all of its systemic issues, or that they are lying about their experiences with racism/sexism/etc (e.g. "Lewis is lying about the existence of racism in F1, because he's successful"). Any such tactless downplaying or denial of said issues is subject to severe disciplinary action.

  • Comments which generalise or stereotype people on the basis of their nationality (e.g. "she's British, she's bound to support Lewis" or "he's Dutch, obviously biased towards Max") will also be met with immediate bans. Respect people's individualty without engaging in nationalistic prejudice and tribalism.

    • This rule also applies to teams, drivers, broadcasters, and members of the press. Do not highlight the nationality of personalities involved in F1 as a pejorative.
    • Whereas we do not tolerate discrimination against populations, please note that criticism of governments responsible for committing major human rights abuses does not, in and of itself, fall under the anti-bigotry rules. Comments reasonably viewed to criticise abusive regimes in favour of pro-human rights sentiments are unlikely to be actioned.

I was recently approached by a user claiming to be the developer of Sync for Lemmy who wanted to be a moderator of the community I created, !syncforlemmy.

I was able to verify this user was indeed LJ Dawson as I knew where to contact him on Discord.

It is quite possible that an impostor user on another instance may be created, for example ljdawson@beehaw.org could easily be made.

Should Lemmy have a verified user marker for members who are of importance to any given community? Are there any other options to protect users against nefarious persons playing impostor?

Good news everyone!

Good news everyone!

Well here is some highly surprising news!

Welcome

Hello everyone and welcome to the Canadian Grand Prix Weekend thread.

Details about this race can be found here.

Sessions

This thread will cover all the sessions this weekend, so that's all 3 practice sessions, qualifying, and the race.

We will monitor how this goes to see if we need more granularity.

Spoilers

The rules around spoilers are not yet in place, therefore we won't be enforcing anything around spoilers this weekend. This goes beyond the scope of this thread too.

If you do not want spoilers, please do not look in this community this weekend.

The aim is to have a finished set of rules ready by mid next week.

The results from the 2023 c/formula1 poll are in

Responses

I've been blown away by the 129 responses we had to this poll. This community is growing rapidly and so we got much more feedback than I expected.

Thank you all for taking the time to have your say, it's really appreciated!

Moderators

I'd like to start by thanking everyone who volunteered to be a moderator.

I've added several moderators to the team, all of which should have received a DM from me confirming moderator status, and an invite to the Discord mod chat.

If you can see you are a mod, but didn't get the DM, please DM me. I know that at least one of you didn't get the message! Maybe Lemmy wasn't feeling well when I tried.

If you haven't been selected to be a moderator, it's entirely due to me not being able to find a post / comment made by you after a cursory search (if there's a better way to add a mod, do let me know!). If you're not currently a moderator and you'd still like to be, please feel free to let me know in here.

Results

I'm sure you're all excited to see how the polls went, so here we go!

For transparency, a copy of all responses (user names removed) can be found here

Should c/formula1 allow posts with spoilers in the title?

Option Count
Yes 45
No 67
Unsure 17

This was a close one, with "No" winning out with just over 52% (rounded) of the votes. As Brits already know, 52% means Brexit, therefore we will not allow spoilers in post titles.

Please select the types of post you'd like to allow in c/formula1

Option Count
Live session discussion 121
Post-race discussion 127
Social media posts from teams 110
Image posts (photos / F1 art) 107
Meme posts 50
Posts relating to the F1 TV service 76
Posts relating to other motorsports (eg WEC, Indy Car, Formula E) 68
Posts linking to F1 news websites 114
Opinion / technical / statistics pieces by members of c/formula1 120
Other 6

It's clear that whilst there is a demand for all F1 content, memes are the least favourable. There are some formuladank communities already available, so we will not allow memes in here.

We shall link to formuladank in the sidebar, along with any other appropriate communities.

6. Should c/formula1 allow posts covering the following illegal services?

Option Count
Live race streams 48
Post-race streams 32
F1 Torrents 30
IPTV Services 24
Other 76

The general opinion was that we should not offer pirate services in this community. The "Other" option was frequently used to express this, as well as the follow-up question #7.

We shall not allow pirate services to be posted in this community. Clarification of what this constitutes will be included in the rules when they are posted.

There were several arguments against this, and I feel that most of us who want to find streams / downloads will be resourceful enough to do so anyway.

8. Should we by and large use the rules from r/formula1 for our community, where possible?

This was the most clear result, with a great majority of you wanting those rules, or something very similar. I'm working on updating the rules and aim to post them after the Canadian GP.

9. Is there anything else you'd like to add?

This was by and large a lovely set of messages showing support for the community. Thank you!

Conclusion

So there you have it! We shall revisit the rules again next year. Please do feel free to message me or any of the other mods, or post in the community if you think there should be a change made somewhere.

Thanks!

Hello,

I'm trying to subscribe to: https://feddit.uk/c/britishproblems@feddit.uk however the search function finds neither that string, nor !britishproblems@feddit.uk.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Hello everyone,

Edit: Responses to the survey are now closed. Thank you for your feedback. I shall present the results soon.

I know, I know. It's another meta post from me!

I got some great feedback from you all regarding the race weekend post format. For Canada we shall trial one stickied post for the whole weekend. We can see how that goes and find out if it makes sense to be a little more granular.

This time I've set up a survey to give everyone a voice on what kind of content we should allow in this community.

The survey can be found here.

Any and all responses are welcome. Feel free to remain anonymous if you wish. I only really need your username if you're wanting to become a moderator. Please enter any mod experience in to the last question if so. I'm not necessarily looking for experienced mods, but it'll be great to know what experience you guys have.

I'll leave the survey up until Wednesday 14th, with a view to formalising the rules we wish to follow after the Canadian GP. I'll hopefully have mods on board prior to that as I'll likely not be able to moderate during the sessions where discussion is often at its most heated.

Thanks for your time all!

Hi all,

How would you like to handle race weekends? AFAIK bots are not really there yet with Lemmy (please advise me if I'm wrong), so I can't automate posts for each session.

Given the current size of the community, do we want / need separate posts for practice / qualifying / race / Post-Race posts?

What do you all want to see?

Hello

c/formula1 appears to be orphaned with no active moderation.

Could I please be made a moderator so that this is no longer the case.

I will reach out to other active users to see if they wish to take up the mantle.

Thanks

Hello,

I'm new here (go reddit exodus go). I've joined a Formula 1 community which has one moderator who appears to no longer be active.

Is there a process in place which allows for members of an orphaned community to become moderators?

Thanks!
